What breed(s) have your doodles been mistaken for?

I know this sounds like a weird post, but I laugh every time I start to count up the number of breeds Moose (or Mica) has been mistaken for. I've had people ask me if he (or she) is: an Otterhound, a Flat Coated Retreiver, a Curly Coated Retriver, a Portugeuse Water Dog, an Italian Spinoni, and......here's my favorite...an Irish Wolfhound. I commented that Moose was a bit small for the last one and they thought he was a puppy (he's a few inches too short even for a puppy). There are a couple more I can't remember right now. In general, I can spot a doodle a mile away now, but people that aren't that familiar with them usually can't quite place the breed (with a few exceptions). It's always been a fun exchange and it sometimes gives me a chance to promote the IDOG rescue and rehome page.

So, anyone else have someone walk up and ask "is that a ________?" (fill in the blank).

PS: I read the "sheep post". They have not been mistaken for sheep (yet) but Mica's back fur does feel like sheep wool. Baa baa black sheep. Ha!

So, Wolfhound seems to be a popular choice. I thought surely our pups were too short. Maybe from a distance! I like the Muppet one. I can definitely see muppet features in many doodles. It's the hair. I still run into folks who have no idea what a labradoodle is....or a goldendoodle for that matter. Our dogs are ambassadors!

Bandit has been identified as a Wheaton,Spimoni,Otterhound, and many I forget, the funniest is what many kids call him...a Muppet!

Hi..Coco especially has been called an Irish Wolfhound and/or the Italian Spinoni on multiple occasions..first by her old groomers at Petsmart!! I find lately that several people had not even heard about "a what?" Labradoodle! These people must live under rocks!!! Have they not listened to the major debate about the President's dog? LOL...anyway, I just laugh and explain that they are THE BEST DOGS ANYWHERE!! Tell them to check out Doodlekisses!!

Hhmmm, most commonly our F1 LD is mistaken for an Irish Wolfhound, closely followed by Italian Spinone, Portuguese Water Dog, Long Haired Pointer.... can't remember the others. Our new LD puppy has a very different (curlier) coat and people can't believe they are both labradoodles!! We also get asked all the time "do they shed", our older one does. I try to explain that the non-shed, non-allergy isn't necessarily true, but I don't think they believe me!!

These are all great!! If you look at a spinone picture, Moose does look a bit like one, but he's way too dark. He's not bloodhound looking enough for otterhound, too large and shaggy for PWD. Airdale is a new one. I especially like the movie/TV characters. Moose almost got named Chewie because he "talks" and some of his sounds are nearly identical to the movie version. It's funny I hear folks mentioning Wheaton a lot. My sister ran the Wheaton Rescue in SW Florida and my parents still have one. They are about the same size as a mid-sized doodle, but not as lanky. I have to be honest and say that I've mistaken a black GD for a LD. I've also had to look at a couple doodles for a while to decide whether they were doodles or poodles. Some sure do have the lanky build and coat of a poodle. If I'm unsure of a breed (any dog) I try to cover myself by just commenting on how cute someone's dog is and then asking what breed it is. :) I've gotten the "they don't shed" comments more times than I can count. Both mine shed. It's luck of the draw....or genes.

When Murphy was smaller (he is 95 lbs) they asked if he was a Wheaton. My neighbor's son thinks he looks like the dog/dragon from "Never Ending Story".

Lucy and Sophie's Mom mentioned about telling people he is a Goldendoodle and have them turn around to whoever and say "I told you it was a labradoodle!" It happens to us all the time.

I think it all depends on the haircut they are sporting at that time. I have heard wheaton terrior a lot, maybe because we had one who passed away in October and I get my doods haircut in this same "puppycut. He does look like one but he is now twice the size of our late dog Buddy. What about these; "Chewbacca" from Star Wars, "Alf", and that dog from the "Never Ending Story" that the boy in the movie rode on-especially when my doodle is running and his hair blows in the breeze

Some one once asked me if Mattie--(the smaller red doodle in my picture) was a golden retriever puppy! My other doodle reminds me a great deal of my dear, departed Wheaten--the hair is very similar and the grooming is equally time-consuming!!

People ask me if Sadie is a Wheaten Terrier...

We had the Airedale, Spinine, PWD identity questions. It is obvious that those people have no clue what those breeds look like!
