Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

LuLu (I'll post a picture of her later) came to us with a litter of puppies.  She and her puppies had been on Craigslist and then was passed from hand to hand until one of our volunteers rescued them and since the Crowe home is the designated Maltese Rescue California rehab center for hurt Maltese and also the delivery room and nursery for litters of puppies we got mom and her four puppies.

Mom has giardia and we are treating her for that.  BTW: a vet has recommended "Odoban" which is a combination odor remover and a disinfectant which will kill both bacteria and viruses.  It is available as a concentrate at Home Depot for ten bucks a gallon. http://www.odoban.com/

We were told that the puppies were probably two weeks old but from observing the puppies, we have determined that they are at least four weeks old.  They are trying to eat from Mom's dish when she is fed.  It is time to start feeding them Royal Canin Baby Dog and Mother Mousse which is a wonderful transition food between mothers breast milk and puppy kibble. This is not cheap and would be quite expensive for large litters of larger dogs like doodles but, it is wonderful for our small Maltese and Maltese-Mix litters... http://www.doggiefood.com/royal-canin-starter-mousse.html?___store=...

Here is the litter of puppies, three males and one female.  I shot this picture to show the bunting that Judy makes to fit in a half of a Vari Kennel for newborn and very young puppies.  Again, this is O.K. for small dogs with small litters but, wouldn't be feasible for larger dogs with big litters.  In colder weather we put a heating pad on low beneath half the kennel and stretching up one side.  That keeps half the box warm but gives pups and mom a cooler side.  It can be laundered very easily and Judy has made several. We usually pad the bottom beneath the bunting with towels for a softer sleeping place for mom and pups.  This way, mom can get out of the box and escape from her pups occasionally...

I will shoot some more of the puppies today...

Lovely!!! I am raising a litter of 6 labradoodles right now and I have to keep the whole room warm since the whelping box is 5 feet by 4 feet! This is a nice thing for the smaller pups!
