Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Most of the time when people see Luna from the back I can understand why they would think she is a duck tolling retriever (nickname "toller").  She has very similar colouring and is almost the same size as one.  Most people are very nice about it, and when I say she isn't one they ask about what she is and are surprised to hear she has poodle in her.

That is the second most common comment other than the "wow is she a full retriever?" or "someone shrunk your retriever in the dryer" type comments about her size.  Yesterday someone greeted us with "wow that's the smallest retriever I've ever seen!"

I think if Luna had a wider muzzle, rose nose and light eyes we could enter her in a dog show for duck tollers and no one would be the wiser.

What do you think?

She just doesn't look Toller to me. All I see is Golden Retriever(I don't think she got much poodle) when I look at her, at least from the photos you provided. I'm a little shocked at how many people felt the need to trash talk the Toller's looks when comparing the above featured Toller to Luna.

I have a great love for Nova Scotia Duck Tollers. My childhood pet was one, at that time they were very rare in deed. Being excellent little dogs their popularity has grown since then.

I now share my home with a Golden Retriever and think she's superb. But I wouldn't call a Golden better than a Toller. I love them both and would celebrate their differences and the ways in which they are similar.

Hurley gets the same questions. We've only had one person ask if he was a doodle. They usually start off with how old and when we say 5 months they start to get confused because in their mind no golden retriever should be this small at 5 months (20lbs). The best comment was "ohhh a golden retriever that stays puppy size forever, it's perfect!". Luna is so pretty, I will be very happy is Hurley turns out like her :).

It is really the color and general build and definitely the ears.  Luna has a much cuter face.

Luna is much better looking. I had considered a "troller" because I had seen one as a pup and they are really cute. But I don't like them as adults. Plus Luna doesn't have the white which is also characteristic, nor the personality I'm sure. She could be a "comfort Doodle". We have one in our neighborhood and they're very cute like Luna but they're small sized (40 lbs) GR's. They do reversed breeding or something between poodle and doodle and come up with a miniature Golden Retriever!!!!

Thanks everyone! We were actually talking about this today (which spurred the blog post) and we're glad she didn't turn out "doodly".  We love her just the way she is.

The weirdest part is her whole litter (F1s) and dogs from other litters with the same father that we've met all look retriever-ish like her.  I guess his poodle curly genes just aren't very dominant!

Luna is Luna, she is a beautiful girl. That's all that matters.

Wow - are you sure we're not talking about a "switched at birth" issue?  Seriously, Luna is a beautiful dog - I especially love her face!
