I am a proud doodle mama tonight and it is because of Fudge. My niece came over tonight with her husband and two children (5 and under). They have never met Vern and last Christmas were deathly afraid of Fudge. I mean standing on the chair screaming kind of scared. Vern is more cautious than Fudge so I was worried about his reaction. Well, it started out badly with both kids clinging to their parents. We leashed the dogs and just kept talking to the kids. Vern was as afraid of these panicking children as they were of him. I told them I was going to bring Fudge over and had her sit in front of them. She was SO good...sat calmly, and gradually they began to reach out and touch her and then pat her and eventually they were calming stroking her. Fudge was in heaven and she just let them pet her without reacting. Usually, Vern is charging in trying to steal her attention, but he just was not sure about these kids, so he hung back with my husband. Fudge took full advantage of this and loved all of the attention. By the end of the night, they were asking if they could give hugs to BOTH dogs. Tonight, I saw a wonderful new side to my Fudge.

I was nervous too, because Vern was so out of sorts. My 75 pound dog was trying to hide behind me :)

Kids who are afraid of dogs usually have a parent who's afraid of dogs, and in every case I know of, it's the father who's afraid. Sadly, kids who behave the way you describe at Christmas are the ones most likely to be bitten.
Fudge, you did a good deed and you are a very good doodle girl!

Cheryl, You are right..they do not have a dog and have always been afraid of our dogs. It didn't help that Vern kept barking. Their dad is fearful too, so that adds to the problem. Our daughter was petrified of dogs when she was little and never had anything happen to her....once we got our dog when she was eight, she fell in love with her and now loves dogs.

What a good girl you are Fudge.....You knew just how to behave with those scared noisy kids...And you turned them into possible doodle lovers too in the future...I wonder why they are so afraid of dogs though? Laurie did something happen to scare them with a dog? I am sure that they do not have a dog, and I always feel bad for those kids that do not have the pleasure of growing up with a dog or a cat. My kids always had a dog, and they are married and still have dogs....Maybe there is a reason that the kids are so afraid, but it is a great that Fudge showed them how good a doodle she is....

It takes time but it is so gratifying to see the change in the kids and dogs.
