Thinking of getting another doodle. Samantha - obviously - is female. How do 2 females do together or should we consider getting a male?

We adopted Charli (female F2b we think) from an Amish PM via rescue in Toledo, Ohio. she is a spunky, full of life little girl. She is sweet and smart and has FINALLY learned that she is not the Queen Doodle in this house. I am sure she will continue to test Samantha but she has learned that she eats 2nd , sits and waits her turn. While we had 3 in the house, she learned to wait while Samantha, then Mickey and then Miss Charli got their bowls. She WILL get it! And while she learns, I am just loving having her around. Watching and learning the differences in their personalities is so much fun to watch.

I'm happy you posted this, as we are also adding a new doodle to our family in a couple of weeks. Kachi is 17 months old (F1 male GD), and we are getting a F1B girl GD. We have always wanted to have two, and we thought bringing her in now, as opposed to later (as Kachi gets older, and gets more set as an 'only') was better. Kachi is, without a doubt, a naturally dominant male. So, we thought adding a laid back, submissive, female puppy, was the best route to go. I just hope Kachi adjusts quickly!! I get nervous thinking about how hard this may be!

We also just purchased another doodle. We talked to the breeder and vet about which sex would be better. We based it more on getting a laid back pup because Mercedes can be very shy around another dogs. We relied on the breeder the most since she has seen the pups from day one. We purchased Mercedes from her 4 years ago and I knew she wanted the pups to have the best match also. When I found out that there was a \litter coming I talked with Gwen lots and gave info about Mercedes. My advice make sure the breeder is great and have them help you with the decision

I think it really depends on the dogs temperament. People usually have an easier time bringing a puppy in than another adult dog as the pup will be submissive and not threaten the other dog's established hierarchy. (at least not for a while!)

I think it depends very much on the dogs involved. Everyone told us to get a female as we already had a male. The breeder told us two males would be fine as long as they were both neutered. A few people told us two females would have been a bad idea as if they fight it can be more viscious. As you remember, we had some issues when we first brought Chase home, Hartley was not happy at all, which really suprised us as he is a really sociable boy. The last couple of months things have been good between them, and now Chase is hitting the teenage phase and challenging Hartley for 'top dog' position - they have had a couple of fights again lately. I think Chase will end up being the top one, he just needs to get a bit bigger so he can challenge for it and hold on to it! Samantha will probably welcome another puppy of any sex into the house, she has been doing so well with Mickey.

My male ALD was 14 mos. when I got my 4 mo. old female ALD. They get along perfectly although they are always play fighting. Both of them squat to pee. For the most part I'm really happy to have 2 but I do find I walk them less and take them fewer places than I did when I had one.

We--or should I say 'I' as while I am researching and 'gathering ammo' (as you put it) for another dog, my husband is researching divorce attorneys as he does not want another one, doodle or otherwise--I am working on that though. Despite all that I have read--and some info a few breeders have shared with me--I would still want another female. Phoebe is great with other dogs regardless of their sex and I know that so many DK members have multiple dogs of the same sex, I am willing to chance it myself. Good luck in your decision!

I think if you get a puppy it will be no problem at all. Gender aside. Sam sounds like she is great with other dogs and to them a puppy is a puppy. If you want a female I say go for it. My 2nd doodle is going to be a female. I love my male dog but since to me there isnt much difference in gender of a fixed dog I prefer the way my female urinates LOL. Bailey cocks his leg and pees on the toys in the backyard because he doesnt know the difference between the Tonka and the big rock. Abby daintily squats and pees. LOL. I prefer the squatting.

I think in general females are more attached to one owner and can be more protective. But for doodles, it may be different since their temperments are generally so great (for instance, my mom's female cairn terrier would not need another lady in the house :) but my Peri might not mind!).

Samantha doesn't seem to have issues with 'dominance' with Mickey - male?? puppy?? He pulls her ears and holds on tight to her tail as she is running for a ball and only once did she stop and give him the 'look' and he took to to heart and stopped - for about a minute. She is extremely tolerant of him playing with all her toys - including her prized posessions Moo and her tub of balls.
Anyone think that her lack of dominance with Mickey is the puppy or male thing? Think she would be good with a female puppy? I know that is impossible to answer if you never met her but given my scenerio , I am kooking for opinions. Thanks!!
