Some days it seemed like today would never arrive. She flew from Portland, Or to Burbank, Ca this morning. 2 hours; arrived at 11:15.
We are now a two-doodle family.
The puppy is home. 10 weeks and 2 days old. Don't know her official weight yet. She will be going to the vet tomorrow morning for her post-homecoming once over. But she is BIG compared to our first girl at the same age.
Our first girl--Daisy---came home at 9 weeks and was just 5 lbs. Now at 11 months she is 35 lbs. Her weight has remained the same since she was 6 months old.
Daisy was the 2nd
smallest in her litter. The new puppy was 2nd
largest----out of 14 !! The breeder said she was 3rd born; started big; stayed big.
We haven't decided on the name yet---though my wife was bugging me all night. She was so calm and quiet today.
But the breeder had first described her as "busy". We asked for clarification on what busy means.
"Busy" as in "naughty"?
We got Daisy from the same breeder. Thre had been a lot of conversations about what we were looking for in our dog; our family situation; our prior experience with dogs (lots); etc, etc.
She recommended Daisy and described her temperament. Daisy has been exactly as the breeder predicted she would be.
So when we were discussing this litter and the breeder said this one may be too "busy" for us, this statement held considerable weight. So we talked several more times about this puppy and the breeder kept an eye on her with us in mind. The breeder had taken to calling her Miss Personality. She described her as eager, inquisitive, always happy, loves everyone......and big.
Maybe she just loves food. Or maybe it's because she had to share with 6 sisters and 7 brothers. But after we had been home a while today, I offered her some kibble in my hand to see if she was ready to eat. She almost ate my fingers too ! She gobbled it down like it was the last food she'd ever get. So I started feeding her kibble from my hand to control the pace at which she could eat. We let her have a cup by the time we were done.
Our Daisy has never been excited about food. She typically sniffs her meal and walks away from it until she's in the mood. This one was all over every handful. At one point she nipped the palm of my hand pretty good because she didn't want to miss one little bit.
She spent a lot of time exploring her new yard. Did very little sleeping.
We are keeping her in a 4' x 4' excercise pen in the kitchen when we cannot give her our complete attention.
We did this with Daisy as a pup also.
Daisy has slept in our bedroom in her own bed since she was 13 weeks.(no crate) By then she had gone 2 weeks with no night-time accidents. We expect to do the same with this one.
Tonight Daisy is in the bedroom with my wife as I write this and the puppy is in the kitchen. Not a peep out of the puppy. Daisy was the same. She started in the pen in the kitchen at night and never cried or complained. Never any separation anxiety at all. Now at 11 months old I sometimes get the sense she can't wait for me to go to work in the morning so she can have the place to herself.
From the first day, our good-bye to Daisy was "no parties; no long distance phone calls". I'm pretty sure she followed those rules---but she sure didn't mind her alone time.
Well day one is long over. It's 2:00 AM.
More on the new life of Daisy and lil sis later.
