This is going to be a little redundant. I have mentioned that Riley is very smart ( he is ) and very observant and apprised of all things around him. Basically, he is a chicken shxt, when it comes to being ahead of the curve in checking strange noises and happenings around the house( he is a minus 10 ). He hears the noise, but doesn't want to be a Colombo and check it out. Case in point. This morning, let him out for early am morning duties. Like normal went two feet out of the door stopped scanned the whole area for any vicious predators, put his head high in the air and sniffed the area for any unwanted creatures. Looked at me, and I told him to go and motioned with my hand. I leave his outside door closed but not latched, so he can push it open when he his ready to come in. I go and get a cup of coffee and do other things. Well, this morning somehow I bent over and my remote car alarm got pressed. I swear, in the nano second after the alarm went off, he hit the door at Mach 1 and ran down the hallway at warp speed and was on the couch looking left and right ( like what the heck just happened, scared the heck out of him ). It was so funny, Riley didn't think that was the case. I love that little guy!

I do the same routine with my dogs. Neely has a huge bark and sounds like he's gonna eat someone. Jazzie growls and gets her back up if she is upset but doesn't bark much. Last week I let them out and a lady walking a golden went down the side walk in front of our house. Neely starts his barking, to say hi of course and come and play. But it scares everyone away and he hasn't figured out why no one comes in to play?? But Jazzie is 17 and fairly blind but she figures hey he's going at it I'll protect the little guy so she starts her "talking" a low growl . Well it turned out all it did was scare me cause all I heard was this huge bark then this strange squealing pitch. I swore Neely had been pepper sprayed or something so I came running to the door in my nightie. When I get there the dog walker is almost by the lot not paying anymind to the dogs Neely just turns and comes in and flops with a thud on the floor and jazzy stands there on the porch glaring in that general direction mumbling something under her breath about what the hell am I all upset about??? Just another nightie nightmare in the neighbourhood. I should get dressed earlier?

While we're on this subject... About 8:30 tonight there was a knock on y door... It was so dark out.. who could it have been. It actually turned out to be a young girl with a clipboard looking for signatures - but I'm not too sure because Tori was barking so loud I couldn't even hear what the girl was asking for even with an open window... The girl couldn't leave soon enough. I think she thought Big Bad Tori was going to go right through the screen. This was one time I was glad she barked... There was a couple of young boys who were jumped not too far from here, so that was a bit scary. I don't think anyone would even try to stay after hearing THAT bark...

I too have a barker, but I would prefer not to--my smaller doodle loves everyone, but Lyric has decided to be a watch dog. She has such a huge bark, she terrifies people. We live in a very safe area and I wish she wouldn't bark at all the delivery men etc, but maybe there is no way to stop this?

Murphy only barks when he is "safe". If something startles him in the yard, he runs back to the deck (safe) and barks from there. If he is in the house, he barks at someone at the door (but with a toy in his mouth!). He SOUNDS big and scary. (He also stands at the door to bark ...and he is taller than I am.)

I'm with you LUCY... Tori barks at every little thing. I think she feels she needs to 'protect and warn' every neighbor within a 2 mile radius! and have a Fed-ex or UPS guy come to our door.... FORGET IT! She totally loses all control and combines her barks with what I have come to call the "sniff-dance". She frantically sniffs around the house. BUT.... I don't think she'd win any props on "FEAR factor"... deep inside I think she's a big scaredy cat...but we won't tell any prospective burglars that...

My 3 will go into a bark frenzy. One thinks they hear something and give a woof. Then the other 2 bark in response and they all run to the back door. They make a barking circuit of the back, figure out it was nothing, come back in the house and go back to sleep. =)

Perhaps you should get a rottweiler, so that Riley would feel more protected ;). Callie is a big weenus - one of my neighbors approached me last night when we were out walking. Callie IMMEDIATELY hid behind me and let out the smallest growl I've ever heard. It wouldn't have scared a mouse away!

Oh poor Riley! He would probably show the burglars where the valuables were hidden (if he wasn't hiding under the bed).

My girls are just the opposite. If it makes a single sound, they are on top of it barking like crazy dogs. Half the time they don't even know what they are barking at! I asked the FedEx guy one day if he were a burglar if he would come in our home and he said "Absolutely not". Not sure who has the better deal ..... I'd settle for a nice happy medium.....Bark if it sounds serious, otherwise, go back to sleep.
