Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful Princess named Fudge in the land of Seven Valleys. She had beautiful, curly brown hair and was called a Doodle.
One day she turned to her stunning, thin, and exceptionally smart mother known as Queen Laurie (hey, I am writing the story, ok?) and told her she wished for a brother. Her mother talked it over with her father, King John, who liked to keep peace in the kingdom, and they agreed to find Princess Fudge a brother. They searched all the lands nearby and finally settled on a cream colored Doodle from the Island of Rhode. Everyone told her they had found a beautiful boy Doodle with yellow hair and since he was a Doodle too, he would be exactly like Fudge. Princess Fudge was so happy and could not wait to meet her brother.
Alas one day, the Queen and her Court Jester (the Queen’s giggly friend) set out on the journey to bring the new addition home. When the Queen first laid eyes on her new Doodle, she fell instantly in love, but noticed that he seemed bigger than she remembered Fudge being and his hair was less curly. They had talked for days about the new Doodle’s name and finally declared him to be Prince Vernors or Vern, for short. On the trip home, the Queen even let the Court Jester drive, so she could hold the new Prince in her arms. The Court Jester felt Prince Vern had already cast a magical spell over his mother, because the Queen seemed oblivious to her bad driving and only yelled once when the Court Jester forgot to brake when parking and ran into the curb.
Upon arriving home, Princess Fudge barked her greeting and Prince Vern began to wail and promptly wet himself. The King and Queen turned to one another in surprise and were afraid they had made a terrible mistake. Eventually, Prince Vern gathered his courage and realized he was going to be happy in this home and he and Princess Fudge became fast friends. Over the course of the weeks that followed, Fudge reminded her mom that Vern was supposed to be just like her, but he seemed different. Princess Fudge asked her mom one day why Vern liked to get so dirty and roll in mud, when she did not care for that at all.
Another day, she asked the Queen why Vern was so big and ate so much, because she was just a wisp of a Doodle and liked to take her time eating. On the way to the Court Groomers, Fudge noticed that she knew right away when her mother headed in one direction that they were off to the dreaded hair appointment, but Vern acted surprised even as they walked in the door.
Princess Fudge started to notice other things too. One morning, she came across some blond hairs belonging to Vern on the Royal Persian Rugs. This surprised her, because she was a Doodle and she never lost any hair. When they went outside to play, Fudge loved when her dad threw the ball for her, but Vern acted like it was too much work to chase a ball and preferred to eat sticks instead. On top of that, he almost never could catch a ball in his mouth, even when he tried very hard. Vern barked a lot and she rarely barked, but Vern was always seeing shadows or hearing noises that no one else could see or hear. Prince Vern was scared of lots of stuff, but Princess Fudge was only scared when she saw Vern running full speed in her direction.
Vern got along with all dogs, but Fudge didn’t always like every dog she met. She loved everybody, though, and Vern was sometimes too afraid or shy to want strangers to look his way. When the Queen got out her camera to take pictures, Princess Fudge always tried to look in another direction, but Vern loved to have his picture taken. Fudge knew she was smarter than almost anyone and loved to drop toys in front of Vern to distract him, so she could get extra hugs and kisses from her mom and dad. Vern, meanwhile, figured out that he was big enough to barrel his way right through Princess Fudge when he needed some hugs of his own.
Fudge was so confused. Everyone had told her that all Doodles were alike, but she lived with one that didn’t seem like her at all. Finally, one night, while she was cuddling in bed with her parents, she asked if Prince Vern was really a Doodle. Queen Laurie, known throughout the land as the wisest one of all, told Princess Fudge that it didn’t take her long to discover that just like humans, Doodles come in all shapes, sizes, personalities, and with all kinds of hairstyles. She also told her it would be a very boring world if everyone were exactly alike. King John said he was going to issue a Proclamation soon that stated that Doodles are not alike and people needed to stop saying they were.
Princess Fudge thought for a moment about what the Queen had said and decided it was just like the Queen and her aunt. Fudge went on to explain that she had always wondered why the Queen’s lap was so much bigger and softer to sit on than her aunt’s. The Queen then told Princess Fudge about a girl named Snow White who went around making very similar comparisons and Fudge decided in the future, some opinions should be kept to herself.
The King, Queen, and Princess Fudge continued to talk about how much they loved Prince Vern and all the things that made Vern unique. Pretty soon they heard Vern headed in their direction. Prince Vern loved cuddle time just as much as Princess Fudge and decided to jump on the bed. Unfortunately, he landed harder than he anticipated and right smack dab on King John’s crown jewels.
(Now, just what did you think I meant when I said Crown Jewels?)
AND they all lived happily ever after!!!
