Its been far too long for a blog update on Oscar... over 2 months?! Wow, how time flies...
Where to begin? Our trials and tribulations with potty training are long behind us now, and since then we've come to discover just how EASY Oscar is. He's got the calmest, mellowest, easy-going attitude and temperament of any dog I've met. For almost 5 months old, that's saying a lot! Training is a snap as Oscar is so food motivated. He learns quickly and will do anything for a treat as long as he knows what's expected of him. I take such pride in him at his puppy training classes, as he's so focused on me the entire time. I shouldn't, I know, because it has little to do with me, and everything to do with his temperament. But I do, all the same :)
Oscar is great around other dogs and puppies. He's confident without being pushy and has all the appropriate social etiquette. He loves playing with other dogs! He went to his first doodle romp last weekend and did wonderfully around the adult dogs. He found a similarly sized and playful doodle with which to make friends and play. He was one tired pup afterward :)
I kind of feel that we paid all our dues up front with our spirited Lucy (3 yrs old) and are now reaping the benefits with Oscar. At least I can appreciate Oscar's easy temperament, and be thankful for it!
The only thing that's really been a surprise (besides it taking Oscar 2 months to potty train), is Oscar's size. He is going to be BIG when we thought we were getting a small standard (40 lbs. max). He's almost 40 lbs. now and he isn't even 5 months old! He's a gentle and sweet giant, though, and is a huge cuddle-bug. He has a wonderful potential to be a therapy dog someday.
He has lots of firsts yet to experience, like a visit to the groomer, his first ocean beach trip and his first LONG car ride, but he's had small tastes of all those (with the exception of the beach trip) and I'm confident he'll sail through them with flying colors.
Thank heavens for Lucy! She's been Oscar's teacher, companion and play buddy. Oscar takes his cue from Lucy and watches her like a hawk. I'm certain she's responsible for his not counter cruising or getting into general trouble. She's made easy work of raising Oscar. We just aren't encountering most of the problems we had with Lucy at his age. We had a nickname for her back then... Little Lucyfer! Oscar, on the other hand, is quite the Angel!

Aw, I loved this update so much. Oscar sounds like such a sweetie. Love seeing your photos and videos!
Your description of spirited Little Lucyfer being followed up by Oscar the Angel is exactly what we're hoping for as grandchild #2 arrives next month. Number 1 Kayla is not exactly a little devil, but she is high energy and rather high maintenance. We're hoping her little brother will be a little more mellow!!!
Oscar is such a cutie! Lucy (and of course mom and dad) have done a wonderful job raising him. So glad I got a chance to meet this sweet puppy! Loved watching him and Charlie romp.
I love to see your videos of Oscar. He reminds me of our Vern, who topped out at 96 pounds :) I am glad things are going so well with Oscar and he and Lucy sound like a match made in heaven. Congratulations!!
Oscar sounds like your typical -- dream doodle! Congratulations.
You, Oscar and Lucy will have so many memorable times together!
Yeaaa Oscar..and momma too!
High fives to Oscar! Or should that be High Paws to Oscar! How wonderful you and Oscar are doing so well at training and both "enjoying" the experience. Keep up the good work Oscar and thanks for sharing Debb. It is always nice to hear good stories about our Doodles:)
I am so glad that things are going well with Oscar and you are enjoying him! Lucy and Oscar make such a cute pair!
