Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I've noticed that there are a lot of questions about ShepaDoodles.

Since the community of ShepaDoodle owners is small still I wanted to share this for future Googlers.

  • Q- I have never heard of Brinkleys breed.
A- ShepaDoodles also sometimes called German Doodles is a Doodle hybrid of German Shepherd with Standard Poodle. & are
    Recognized By     DBR , IDCR

  • Q- When did they start Poodle Shepherds together?
A-I have not seen the answer to that other than like many other times the point was  to take your favorite breed & make them  more Hypo allergenic.

  • Q- SheepaDoodle? ShepaDoodle?
A-Though the names are very close they are very different SheepaDoodle is an English SHEEP  Dog, think sheep two ee's.

  • Q- Looks-
A-Shepadoodles are robust, supple, elongated, muscular, and dignified in appearance
Some wonder if the mix an oddity the GS being such a strong looking dog, some have said they thought they would look too GS but all the ones I've seen ,look all Doodle with the spark of a GS.

  • Coat-
A-The Doodle look is strong  with fluffy coats that are very dense & fleecy. Needing grooming daily to every other day.
  • Colorers are based on parentage:
The Muzzle often has a silver tone & sharper shape of the GS making a very intelligent focused almost serious look at times.

  •  Q-Hypo Allergenic-
    A-
Though most doodles unless f1b cannot guarantee being so, the ShepaDoodles seem to have a significant percentage of being so, even the ones that shed some what, the dander nor the hair seems to bother those with allergies.

  • Q-Ears-
    A-
This was my question straight out when I first heard about these guys. The ears stay down MOST of the time ;) The ears are like a shorter labs ears laying against the head & lamb soft. They tend to inherit the poodle hairy ears & need tweezing & cleaning.

  • Size-22-26 inches tall and around 85-95 pounds when fully grown.

  •  Q- Personality -
A-With two highly intelligent parentage genes.
Shepadoodles are very intelligent and obedient.
They require thourough discipline and early training.

  • Shepadoodles are loyal, faithful, versatile, calm, fearless, courageous, self-confident, reliable, protective, responsive, alert.- They are super friendly Doodle personality with a bit of kick from the GS side. Under the right hands they have the ability to be trained for protection.
These dogs are very smart, quick & need stimulation of the mind with games etc. The Con is they will make their own games up 0.o!

  • Note- though a lovely Doodle personalty the GS in them requires you are a strong leader pro-active training only, the Poodle in them requires you don't go too far with heavy-handed training.

My Opinion- F1- is German Shepherd to Poodle ( 1 st Gen). Some breed them back into poodle making them F1b, I personally think breeding a F1 back into a poodle is a disservice to the breed mix.

Thanks for the info, I had not heard of this mix.  A lady I work with has dalmatian poodle mixes but I forget what they are called.  But Brinkley sure is cute!!

@ Adina- kinda hard Not to generalize when posting a Q/A factual sheet.

As far as the coats they are usually not shedding hence the suggestion of brushing through reg. Since I have not owned an adult I do not know for certain about the need to groom daily or every other. Brinkley does not shed so his under belly coat gets matted easy bc it is so dense. My groomer says it is denser than the Lab/Golden doodles she has seen.

Anywhoo just putting together some "facts" though general about Shepadoodles do to interest & en-query, other wise the blog would have been mammoth. ;)

Thank you for compiling the information for us.  My only skepticism about ANY doodles is generalizations though.  Neither labradoodles nor goldendoodles (who there are lots more of from which to draw conclusions) are consistent in looks or coats or size even in the first generation.  So I feel hesitant to really believe any generalizations about other doodles, which there are far fewer of.  For example the size range of 85-95 lbs is a super tight range.  Even GSDs and poodles don't fall into such a tight range in their own breed.  How can we really know their ultimate size (height or weight) will fall into such a tight range?  And as far as coat care, I would imagine the shedders require very little coat care -- at least no more than a GSD.  Just like my F1 labradoodles require minimal care--definitely NOT daily or even weekly brushing. On the other hand the ones that turn out to be non-shedding could have the potential to be VERY high maintenance coat-wise.  As to the registry...to me that doesn't increase or decrease their 'value' as a registry where one can merely register a dog really isn't that meaningful.  Now if there were a parent club for shepadoodles, specifically, with standards of breeding, etc.  That would be impressive.  Of course such parent clubs didn't exist for labra- or goldendoodles for quite a while either so it's always possible, I guess.

Anyway, not trying to be negative, I would say the same thing for any generalizations about labradoodles or goldendoodles.  I just think it's important to remember that with ANY mix, one can get the Best of both breeds, the worst of both breeds, or some combo of a little bit of the best and worst and stuff in between.  There's no way to know beforehand or predict what one puppy will turn out to be.  I like that about doodles for the most part, but want anyone to know that it's a roll of the dice for every characteristic -- will it come from the poodle or the other breed?  It's always a surprise!

Thank you for the information Kris.  Brinkley is a cutie even with a "bad haircut."
