She's "Unadoptable". . . NO. Your wrong.
As many of you know, my husband and I decided to foster Sophie for Second Chance Rescue. She is our first foster dog. Last night, my husband and I talked for hours about this wonderful experience we have had.
See, she has been through alot, escpecially taking in to account the fact she could not see much. She had lived for her whole life in one home and was well taken care of there to my knowledge. Due to difficult life circumstances, the owner had to surrender her to a humaine society. This was Sophies first obstacle. She laid there in the back of the kennel, scared. It must have been terrifying to be in a cage, and not know who is walking by, or who all of those barking dogs were. This is where she was labeled "unadoptable" by the Humane Society. Thankfully, Second Chance found her. They made it there mission to not only find her a home, but to help her get her eyes fixed. Things were finnally looking up for Sophie- though she didn't know it yet.
This is where Don and I come in. Sophie became our first foster dog. She had a hard time adjusting to a new home at first. She did alot of submissive urinating, but we worked through that the first week. She ran into everything, but that improved over the first week. The second week, we realized she was terrified of the our lower level. Only four setps to conquer, we helped her to get over that fear (at least in our home) and she now travels freely through the house. We worked on getting her used to being left alone- this was hard for her at first. The third week was so wonderful, she finally felt safe in her kennel and the traces of seperation anxiety had passed. I finallly felt comfortable leaving her at the groomers, where she recieved a makeover.
After the doctors appointment to determine if Sophie was a canidate for surgery, I talked with Linda at Second Chance. She told me that they were getting donations from all over for Sophie to have her surgery. I was so excited! Sophie was going to get her surgery! They had us scheduled for December 1st and we were so excited for her. She was going to get her sight!
December 1st was a hard day. I said goodbye to Sophie and went to work while my husband brought her in for her surgery. I didn't know I could get so worried about a dog- but I was praying everything would go alright. Everything went well, a the journey of recovery began.
She looked absolutely miserable. I gave Linda from Second Chance a call, and she gave me a pep talk for the rough night ahead. She told me about DoodleKisses and that they were able to raise all of the money for her surgery. I was overwhelmed with joy.. I knew alot of people were looking forward to see Sophie recover.
Sophie quickly learned how to reach her face with her back legs. So, my husand and I took shifts overnight lying with her. Sophie woke up every 2-3 hours.
December 2nd, The nex day, was facinating! More for her than us. She discovered everything all over again. It was a fun day, and her checkup went wonderful. My husband and I read through the doodlekisses website, crying. That night we talked for hours about "Sophie girl".We have become attatched. I guess we just weren't cut out to be foster parents.
Today, December 3rd Sophie has overcome one of her largest obstacles. Finding a Forever home. My husband and I are in love with this girl! We have decided to make her a part of our family, forever. After everything she has been through, we know it will be so wonderful for her not to feel abandoned again. She is truly a blessing to us. Though she has a long road to recover, we will nurture her every step of the way.

Wow!! Thanks Liz for posting this to give us some great news! I have said that I will NOT read these posts while I'm at work b/c of all the tears they create, but I could not wait til I got home to find out about Sophie! (So, as a result, I am sitting at my desk and the tears are just streaming. I know my boss probably thinks I have some real problems) Please keep us posted on her progress, and don't forget to take lots of photos of her so we can all see her. I really feel proud being a part of DK and being able to help Sophie get her sight.

I think this is the best Christmas present for everyone. In these crazy times wonderful, beautiful, magical things do happen. I"m all misty-eyed. Thanks for sharing your trials & tribulations & CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

I'm too crying and then some while reading this. I can't say anymore than what has been said. Enjoy Sophie and the three of you - have a wonderful Christmas. I'm so glad all of could help Sophie - but you guys did the most. Again Merry Christmas to all of you. Maybe you'd like to join the Christmas Card group so Sophie can get cards from all her doodle friends - especialy since she can see them now.

Liz, Don & SOPHIE girl !!!!!!! I am bawling as I read this post. What a wonderful thing you are doing in adopting our special Sophie. She is a special gift that has been sent to you and you 2 are her special gift as well. Lucy and I are sooooo pleased that you have decided to join DoodleKisses. Keep posting pics of her and videos. We all love her and you both. I am proud to have been part of Sophie regaining her sight. That is our Christmas gift to her. CONGRATULATIONS on having Sophie in your life, you will be rewarded many times over.

This is really more of a doodle fairy tale than a blog! Tears in my eyes and joy in my heart!
I am so happy for you, Don, and "our Sophie Girl"!
In the rescue world, when a foster home ends up adopting their foster, it's called a 'foster failure." Did anyone ever think something called a "failure" could be so wonderful?
Congratulations to all of you on the start of your happy new life together!
