It’s only been two days, but I can’t find any fleas on Traveler or on my socks after the ‘white sock test.’ This is the first time in several months that I haven’t been able to find a single flea, and I’ve tried Frontline Plus, Advantix, Nature’s Guardian, flea powder and comb and a flea bath. Some of these have definitely lowered the flea population, but that’s the best result I could get. I could always find a few fleas.
This time I used Comfortis (a beef-flavored tablet) for Trav and Siphotrol Plus II, an insect growth regulator premise spray, for the house. The Comfortis is obtainable by prescription only, and the Siphotrol I got from my vet’s office. Interesting thing about Comfortis–it says studies show that it begins to kill fleas in 30 minutes and killed 100% within four hours. Naturally, I just had to check Trav after four hours. I found one almost-dead flea on his belly. In another five minutes, it would have been a goner. Impressive!
I did do plenty of prep work, such as a thorough vacuuming of the house, washing Trav’s bedding, toys and grooming gear, washing all the throw rugs and my own bedding, and vacuuming the car.
Just a few months ago, if I thought about fleas at all, I assumed they were sort of like mosquitos, if you saw one you swatted it–end of story. Ha!!

I'd never even heard of a tick collar! I'll give Trav Comfortis and 15 days later the Heartgard Plus, so hope the pest probs are under control. BUT sounds like I'll be the new home for a couple of big Ragdoll or Ragamuffin Siamese cats, so might be starting pest problems all over again! The cats have received some kind of flea treatment, and I've known them since they were kittens, so am hoping we can all get along... Last time Trav saw them, he was scared of them. Should be interesting!
I have been using the Confortis too, and I love it. NO FLEAS!!...I do use a tick collar on them, and that does work. I get that from the vet when I get the confortis. this year we have had no problem with fleas or tics!!!
Hi, Teri! As another first time dog owner, I know exactly what you mean! Cheers for Comfortis!
I had a few months of flea trouble, too, after I got Clover. This dog has definitely not gone easy on this first time pet owner. Finally, I tried Comfortis and not a single flea. :)
I'll know more when a couple of weeks or months have gone by. I didn't like getting the Frontline or Advantix on my hands either, but would have endured that gladly if either had worked! A week or so after the last time I used Frontline, Trav had more fleas than when it was first put on him! I still have some Advantix, so maybe will use that if we'll be out in tick country.
I'm so happy to hear you're over the worst of it!
Glad to hear that the fleas are gone. That in itself is like a holiday present.
