We got a call from a volunteer networker at 2:30 today that there was a one-year old Maltese female in the San Bernardino City Shelter who was going to be put down if she was not pulled from the shelter a 5:00 pm.

Judy called the shelter and found that there is no way they would delay the euthanasia even if we guaranteed that we would pick this girl up.  It was 3:00 PM when I got on the road for the 75 mile (approximately) trip to the shelter.

Luckily, there was no freeway traffic on my way up there and I made it in just an hour and was able to pull this girl whom I named "Lucky" because, she was.  It took close to three hours on my return trip because of two traffic accidents in the Southbound lanes of the freeway.

This is quite normal on our Southern California freeways.  Fast going when there are no accidents and a grinding crunch if there are.

Anyway, this is my entry picture of Lucky.  I always shoot an entry picture so we have a record of what the dogs look like when we get them.  Unfortunately, Maltese (and doodles) need some coat care and can look pretty ragged if left without that care.  Lucky was filthy and full of fleas and ticks.  Judy is grooming her as I write this but, we will wait until tomorrow to photograph her "after" shot.  he has had enough done to her for one day...

A shelter worker told me that she had been ready to stay after the shelter closed so I could pick up Lucky if the traffic was bad.  We are going to send a before and after picture of Lucky as a thank you to that worker.

Thank you for all you do!  Poor baby. I'm not surprised that you found all that stuff under her coat.

You and Judy are such amazing people.  I wish there were more like you in this world.  Lucky is one "Lucky" girl.  Hugs to Holly!

N pictures of Lucky yet.  She had an abscess under her matted coat on her right ear from an ingrown foxtail and lots of dirt.  It required surgery and a couple of stitches.  So while the vet fixed that we also had her spayed.  She is doing pretty well now but has a bandage around her head which will remain on for ten days to two weeks.

Richard, I am so glad that the traffic worked in your favor. We weren't home yesterday, so it wouldn't have worked, but we live about 20 minutes from that shelter and would be willing to pull a dog and wait with her in the parking lot until you could get there. If this would help you, message me and we can exchange phone numbers.

Always there for these forgotten dogs and thank you so much!  You are both angles to say the least!  She is a cutie even in her ragged state!
