Liberty is a case of neglect that was serious but didn't look  bad from the outside.  Liberty is a lovely Maltese-Poodle mix who is a bit less than a year old.  When I picked her up from the Carson, California shelter, the shelter said that she had a "problem with her left rear leg or hip".  The shelter was going to put this darling dog down the following day because her medical "problem" made her unadoptable to the general public...

Our orthopedic vet found out that Liberty's "problem" was that her femur had been shattered in two places and was broken into three parts.  The vet said that this injury had been caused by a kick or being hit by a car and was an old injury. This brave little girl had been probably been walking around on a shattered femur for months.

After surgery which inserted a rod to stabilize the femur attached to another external rod, Liberty is walking around quite well and is putting weight on the leg.  The vet's prognosis is extremely encouraging and it looks like Liberty will be walking like normal after the femur heals and the rods are removed.

The vet said that he is astounded at her recovery and said she must have a very high pain tolerance.  The more she walks on it the quicker and better it will heal...

How terrible that Liberty was left to suffer and how great that she found you and is now on the road to recovery and the best possible forever home. I have had Maltese all my life and they don't complain even when they are in pain. I don't think that it's because they have a high pain threshold I just think it is their gentle and passive nature.

Whatever happened to her is so very sad and sickening, unfortunately every "person" is not like you Richard. A resounding Amen for your rescue and your love.

Liberty is the perfect name for her as she has been liberated from a life of torture.
