Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Lots of times here on DoodleKisses, I see members ask if they should stop crating their dogs at night. Many of those times, the dog is happy in the crate and it is the human who misses the doggie snuggling at night. Take my word for it, let sleeping dogs lie IN their crates.

In the summer, Fudge and Vern get too hot on any bed and prefer to sleep on the cold, hard floor. They might start up here on our bed for a little bit, but usually when my husband comes to bed, they want down and oh, how I wish some nights we could walk out to the foyer and say “crate” and in they would go.  Sure, I could start now, but I don’t have the heart.

The problem is once my husband makes the announcement “last call” Vern usually gets a second wind and likes to include us in the revelry.

So, my husband has two choices every night.

1) Try to squeeze his way into bed between these two and hope Vern stays asleep long enough for him to fall into a deep sleep so his wife can handle the nighttime activities.

2) Wake Vern and Fudge up and chance experiencing some of this:

or this:

or this:

or even this:

Since he usually goes with option one, what I wouldn’t give for two dogs that love their crate and long to sleep in there at night…..ALL NIGHT, EVERY NIGHT. Instead, we play musical beds almost every night and this morning I ended up with Vern and Fudge on our bed. Luckily, for me the 100 pound dog chose my side for his resting point and that meant I slept the remainder of the morning in a position that I have not been in since gymnastics camp at age nine. I just regained the feeling in my legs at lunchtime.

I think the ship may have sailed on the crate thing ( an analogy for you cruisers). I know these doodles are not small but I swear they grow to twice the size at night when they are taking up the major share of your bed. Lately I seem to have been sleeping in a wee small corner of the bed and trying to straighten my legs is like coming up against a brick wall, and that wall will not move. I may not sleep in that exact position as you do Laurie but I sure wake up feeling like I did. It is a good thing you are so waif like and take up hardly any space.

Leslie, I have mentioned before that I am exceptionally thin :) Almost model like..LOL!

Halas is only 29 lbs, but he can still take up a huge portion of a king size bed.  So I'm surprised any human, pretzel shaped or not, can fit in your bed with two doods.  But I love my cuddle-dood time in the morning.

Bonnie, Fudge makes herself pretty small UNLESS Vern is up there too and then she stretches out and fills the space like you cannot believe. Vern fills it by not even stretching out...he just does...LOL! I do like a dog with zeal...LOL...just maybe not in bed. Kona sounds like a very considerate dog.

Ricki, I will send them to you when we are in Oregon so we can get a good night's sleep...LOL. We do have a lot of Doodle and I am extremely limber...haha!

OMD! That first picture of the doodles just makes me want to crawl in there and snuggle them!! There's SO much doodle to love at your house!!! LOL! Now as for your sleeping position!!!! OUCH!!!!

Oh Laurie! I hear your pain! I have decided that Owen is going to have to stay off of our bed. Somehow Kona manages to make himself really small at the end of the bed and if he wants to stretch out he jumps off to lounge on the floor. Owen, on the other hand, is a dog in your face, and there is no hope that he will be avoiding making us uncomfortable. The zeal with which Owen lives his life can be entertaining, but it also can be exhausting after having such a mellow sweetheart for 3 1/2 years prior to Owen's entrance. I used to have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who took up the whole bed. Do not understand this.

Kaytlin and Camilla, Count your blessings :)

Sue, Thanks. Man-handle is the perfect expression...LOL!

Im rather thankful Cooper does not like to sleep on the bed after reading your post. I do have 2 cats that will only sleep on MY side of the bed

LOL, how funny. Kind of feeling glad that Darwin loves his crate. :-)

HAHAHAHAAH!!!!!! OMD this is too hilarious!!! I'm sure many of us have similar sleeping experiences with our doodles. We, however, don't have to man-handle our doodle on and off the bed, that must get exhausting after a few rounds! Fudge and Vern's mug shots are priceless!
