Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi, I have posted most of this on "my post",not realizing that I should have posted here.. We are empty nesters for the most part now after being married for 33 yrs. It took alot of soul searching to decide to get another dog since it has been 6 yrs since our Chow has passed, and finally being free to go when and where we want and not worrying about a pet. To make a long story short, we decided to add a puppy to our family. I have been doing research on the goldendoodle and decided on one. After seaching around for one we ended up driving to Kentucky to get one. ( we live in WV).. We decided on one that was 2 months old, male. Now to the crazy? part.....not only did we get Scrappy, but I found myself in the back seat with not one, but TWO puppies!! Scappy had a half brother that was 2 1/2 weeks older that had not been adopted from his litter. (same father, different mothers)....sooooooo we also took Shaggy home too!! I do not know what possessed us! A major "senior moment" I guess.....haha....The first night home, we were up at 5AM with the pups. As we were standing out side in the snow to potty, we both started to laugh. I said"well we did say we wanted something to do together as we got older!!!". If someone would have seen us they would have sworn we were crazy! It has been three weeks saturday since our new family has joined us. I think we have laughed more in the 3 wks, then in 3 months before......probably more frustration too! Trying to potty train, stop the biteing of each other and us.........but definitely the fun wins out in the end.....Any and all suggestions and help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for listening to my story.....sorry so long......Have a great day!

Sherrie, Congrats to you on your new babies! We did the same thing!! We also are empty nesters and my husband suggested a couple of years ago that we get a Goldendoodle. I agreed and off we went to a breeders to check out their new litter of pups. We decided on Maddie. The next day, he said, "Lets get another one too!" I said, No Way! We do NOT need TWO big dogs. I fought him for about a day or so (yeah right!!) then I gave in and we called and got Morgan! There have been many a time that I said, "What were we thinking???" But, honestly, we have not regretted it one bit, and I am so thankful that I let him talk me into getting 2!! Have fun - twice as much!!

Sherrie, congratulations and welcome to DoodleKisses! We also have two, they'll be one year old on April 1st, and we've had them since they were 7 weeks old. Having 2 puppies is a challenge at first, but well worth it. I wouldn't worry or even try to keep them from biting/romping with one another. They won't hurt themselves. Gus and Molly still do this every day, it's just the way pups play with one another. I have successfully trained them on my own to sit, stay, and come, and trained them on our invisible fence. Still working on the jumping on people, this is a tough one to accomplish. If you can afford it, I'm sure training classes would be a huge help, but they would need to be in separate classes. I have found that it's pretty much impossible to train them together. You are going to have so many laughs, it's hilarious to watch their antics! Scrappy and Shaggy are adorable! Enjoy!

Congratulations! If I had to do it over again, I would have started with two puppies, as a companion for Penny.

I was wondering when the best age is to start them in obediance training. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Wow congrats! That will be really fun. And handful, but fun. And the pups can play with each other a lot :)

My hats off to you both - two puppies?!?! They sound adorable and I'm so glad that you're enjoying them and finding the humor! Can't wait to read more about their adventures as they grow together!

Maybe a weeeeee bit crazy ;) but so are most of us!
Good luck! I can't even fathom 2 puppies at once but we have a handful of members who've done it. The one thing I'd advise (from reading NOT experience) is to BE SURE to spend some alone time with each puppy and train them separately in obedience. That will prevent them from bonding more to each other than you, their leaders :)

It sounds like you have what you need most to survive the months ahead: a sense of humor! Congratulations, mama!
