Harlow is still getting car sick whenever she goes for a ride which is at least 2 to 3 times a week. I was researching on the web (and DK) for natural remedies for preventing car sickness. Several articles mentioned fresh ginger or gingersnaps. So today I tried the gingersnaps. I used the gingersnaps as treats while we practiced our obedience. I waited an hour before our car ride so Harlow could digest. We weren’t even 2 miles down the road before Harlow up-chucked in the car seat. Thankfully, I have a removable car seat cover. We returned home and I threw the cover in the washing machine and bathed Harlow.

We will give another try tomorrow.

Thanks for all the advice. We did the ginger again today and waited an hour before taking a drive to the dog park 1.5 miles from the house. This time I also took the beagles along. The boys love to go for car rides. All 3 sat in the back seat and I opened the sun roof as we rode. Harlow still drooled a lot, but kept all the contents of her stomach where it belonged. We played at the dog park for a little over an hour then drove home. Again lots of drool, but nothing else. We will try to go a bit further tomorrow.

It is my understanding that the ginger for people or dogs needs to be ingested starting a few days before a trip. I used to give ginger doggie cookies as treats 2-3 days before a trip for Kona and she was better. She is two now and no longer throws up on long rides. We just did the 5+ hours to Malibu for the romp and she was good, even up the long and winding hills, even her Mom felt like throwing up after that LOL I had read somewhere that ear development had something to do with younger dogs having motionsickness, but I also have friends who's dogs never get passed throwing up. I used to not feed her before trips also.....
Hope Harlow grows out of it, try the ginger for a few days, hope it helps!

I had the same problem with Gus and Molly. We tried taking them with us each day to the mailbox (2 miles each way) hoping that would help, it did not. My vet told me that in most cases it's caused by anxiety, not motion (young puppies excluded). So, on a 2-hour drive to visit our daughter, I tried sitting in the back seat with them while DH drove - no sickness! We did this a few times, now they want to ride every time we go out (I think we created two monsters!), and I no longer have to sit in the back with them.

I have the solution. Adina has these squeaky toys that just are not working out in her home right now. She can send you these old toys and you can place them on the windshield wipers. They will squeak when you turn the wipers on... and Harlow won't be able to stop looking at them! Wadda u think?

Yankee used to get car sick all the time but he did outgrow it. He will be 2 in October and the last time he was sick was last summer.

What direction does Harlow face? All my dogs are pining for a look out the front window....does Harlow lie down or look out the side or back?

Isn't there some kind of harness that fastens to the seat belt and keeps them in an up-right, forward facing position?

How do you keep a dog facing forward in a moving car?
I used to drive a limo. If anyone said, "Car Sick", they were placed in the front seat and were told to keep their eyes on the horizon. It worked, even when alcohol was involved.
I wonder if you could place a hood ornament on your car that Harlow could focus on, facing forward only. Truly sounds silly, but I think it could work. Even if it doesn't could you please take a picture?!?
