I've had a fly in my bedroom for three nights now. (No, I don't live in filth, I swear.)
I think flies move a bit slower in winter? Its zooming had been easier to ignore than usual. So, for two nights I halfheartedly swatted at it with a book and then let it go. Porter also made a couple pathetic attempts to eat it in midair, but he was also uncommitted.
Well, tonight I decided enough was enough, and Porter realized this.
I got out of bed and started tracking it. He got out of his fetal-dog position and started snapping at it and showing me with his gaze where it had flown. For all that dogs have bad vision, mine is apparently worse.
Porter made first contact. He caught the fly in his mouth, but dropped it right away.
I moved in with a book smoosh, on my soft comforter. Ineffective but showed Porter I meant business.
As the fly was crawling away, Porter managed to grab it again. He chewed a couple times and spat it out again, and again, and again. Until when he spat, nothing came out. He was noticeably disappointed that the mission was over.
But I cheered him up with a "Good doggie, yeah!" He's earning his keep. I have a working dog.

This is great! Go Porter!!!!
Way to go Porter!!!! Callie will now point out bugs in the house, but won't kill them for me.
Glad it was a successful "mission"! When the word gets out that there's a hunting Doodle at your house, I'm betting the flies will go elsewhere! Nice job, Porter!
Hey Porter, good job but next time you work so hard you should get a super great treat for saving the day! -Clifford
Hi, Porter--Traveler here. Nice going, buddy! I've never caught a fly. I tried to play with a slug one time, but it didn't want to play very much. Mom wouldn't let me play with the bee. :(
LOL, hubby said the last time he and my Buddy were hunting down a fly, he swatted it and Buddy ate it :) He sounded so disgusted, I had to laugh!!!!
You guys make a great hunting team!
awww such a sweet story! Go Porter! Nice one!
