OH NO,,,,,DIngleberries!!!! Is his hair shaved around his bottom?
Trim the hair back there...what's known as a "sanitary trim".
Our vet calls these Klingons (lol). We use a baby wipe to just gently cleanse the area. It doesn't happen too much but the hypoallergenic baby wipe doesn't seem to irritate Snicks skin.
TRIM THE HAIR AROUND THEIR BUTT! I just learned this lesson the hard way...Callie was straining and straining to poop...I assumed she was constipated, but decided to check out what was going on "down there" and discovered that she had a matted dingleberry and lots of hair pretty much sealing her anus off, preventing her from pooping. I felt like the worst mom in the world (I had a slick coated dog before) and had to pretty much give her an emergency tush-wax onsite. Now I trimmed her up and she's not having further problems.
Dingleberries! Dingleberries!

Yes, if his butt hair is not trimmed short enough, then it's much easier for poo to get caught there. Wipes work for some dogs, but usually by the time I notice it on my Rosco...wipes are useless because they've been baked on ;-)

However, washing a doggy butt as needed is not like washing a whole dog with shampoo every day -- he'll be fine in the meantime and you DO want a clean behind if you're gonna trim him anyway. But do get him trimmed back there. And is his poo really soft and runny? Or does he have a hard time getting it all out? That may contribute too.
You're just thrilled to death by this discussion, aren't you, Adina? Dingleberries again, and you didn't even instigate it this time.
Dingleberries :
hahahahah Karen, I thought the same thing.. I rushed in here first to see what is being said. Adina, you are recovering and adjusting. You are answering quicker these days.
I've mastered the fine art of BF in the wee hours while typing with one finger! Sorta...sometimes.
Although the above two paragraphs was two handed with fed baby snoozing on the sofa next to me.
I was waiting for Adina to chime in. It wouldn't be a real "dingleberry" discussion without her. lol.
OMG, I actually too Piper to the vet the other day, thinking he had eaten something that was blocking his poo from, ahem, exiting. Turns out, it was a dried poop that was blocking the exit! I almost died of embarrassment! Do you guys shave or trim, and how in the heck do you keep them still to do this? And how much of an area do you trim! LOL! This is ALMOST as gross of a discussion as the picking out their eye goobers forum. Grossness for sure, but helpful! :o)
Scissors trim; clippers or shaving will irritate the sensitive skin. My groomer does it, but I've done "touch ups". You just cut the hair around the anus, it's not necessary to cut a large area. And while we're having this conversation, the hair at the tip of the penis needs to be trimmed, too, or it can lead to an infection.
As for how to keep them still, I have a perfect dog, lol. He stood still for 2 biopsies and the surgical removal of a growth with only local anesthetic! So I'm no help there!
Yes that darn prepuce hair! Hate it. I was brushing Rosco and got to his underbelly area and felt some wetness on my arm. It was cuz his prepuce hair had gotten too long and started remaining wet after he'd pee. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeew! I sent him in for a Brazilian within the week.
