the other day I had Oliver groomed and everything was fine. The next morning I noticed that he was scratching quite a bit, so I looked and could not see any problem, no fleas, ticks, etc. His skin looked just fine. So I called the groomer and asked what she had used on him to bathe him. She told me she used the usual shampoo that she always does on him, an oatmeal shampoo...Ok, so the next day I notice that he is chewing his paws and legs much of the time. I took him over to the vet and she looked and said there wasn't anything to really see except where he had been chewing it was getting red and raw...She gace me a medication called Temeril, it is supposed to be an antihistimine with a little bit of steroid in it. Well he is taking it fine, and of course he wants more water, they told me he would, and I remember with other dogs I have had. they need more to drink with these kind of meds...We have been walking him much more of course, and today he has had 3 accidents in the house...He has not peed in the house in about 3 mos. He usually goes to the back door and stares at me to go out, so we have been watching him extra careful. But he has peed in my bedroom, the kitchen and the hall!!!!...Any suggestions? I hate to crate him, he is crated at bedtime, and until this med we have had no problem...I don't want to yell at him either, but this is not a little spot peeing, this is a 67 lb dog peeing...Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...He has to be on this med for around a week, decreasing amounts as we go along...But the problem is now...Thanks guys....Cheryl

I don't know for sure, since I haven't had to put Timbow on steroids, but I remember from a post earlier this week that this is normal. Unfortunately because Oliver is drinking more, he is having to go potty more and at times just can't hold it. Obviously because he doesn't normally urinate this often it probably creeps up on him. As frustrating as it is, I would be patient with him and continue to watch his every move and anticipate him having to go. I will try to find the other discussion on this for you. :-)
I can't find the discussion. :-( Here's what I would do (hopefully someone that has been through this will chime in), I would take Oliver outside every hour - hour and a half to go potty. I would be careful of crating him too much because you don't want him to have an accident in there. It sounds like he is totally house trained and isn't having a peeing in the house relapse, so I would be ready and take him out as much as possible so that neither of you are stressed.
I am going to take him out more then every hour, we were taking him around every 30-45 min. He just ate dinner, so of course he had water, and I took him out as soon as he finished and he peed again...I will wait another 1/2 hr and he will go out again and I guess I will do this thru the night until bed time...Poor baby, I feel so bad for him, he knows he shouldn't do this in the house, and I don't want to stress him out either, or me, so we will just go out more frequently. I also don't want to get him in the habit of thinking it is ok to go out every 15 min, lol....Hoping this is all med related....thanks for the quick responses...I appreciate that...Cheryl
Cheryl, Piper just had to have a couple steroid shots this week after a bad reaction to his vaccination. Anyway, her was doing the same thing...acting like he had a bladder infection and having to pee every few minutes. Before I realized what was going on, he had had a few big accidents in the house. So the very sweet DK members told me (I looked this up online too) that any antihistamine will totally do this to our little doods. As soon as all the antihistamine was out of his system, he was back to normal. I just tried to let him out every few minutes and let him have as much water as he needed...for three days. :o)
thank you, I sort of knew it was from this, sp we will just keep taking him out, and I think I am going to give ice cubes instead of reg water, he loves them, and this might help...
Here's the link to Chelsea's discussion; that's the one Judi was trying to find:

ahhh! Thank you! I was searching steroids and completely passed this one up! :-)
thanks I appreciate that
Just a thought.....some places let your dog play with other dogs after they are done grooming. If he did play with another dog he may have picked up what was used on them......flea medications ect.
You may want to give him a bath with the shampoo that you use at home to make sure he didn't pick anything up.
your groomer may have used a dirty shaver or brush, or shaved him too close so he got razor burns. To prevent this from happening again, I would ask groomer to please only use clean tools and to avoid close-shaving next time. You can also use regular cortisone cream on itchy spots, which may work just as well as the oral meds depending on the severity of course.
Eva ty for the reply. I have been using the same groomer for over 10 yrs and have never had a problem. The hot spot on his foot is above the ankle and I had to take him to the vet for them to clear away the hair to see the area that he had been licking....He has very furry paws, she scissor cuts him for the most part except around the anal area and penis area,,,,I am going to go and get some cortizone cream or spray and try that. If he would leave the sock on, which he does for a bit, it would be fine, Tonight my husband put a longer sock over the shorter one and that seems to be working much better,,,,I am using only white cotton socks that I have been washing in dreft, which is supposed to be the mildest. and rinse out the best. I fed him rice and chicken tonight and last night witha teaspoon of pumkin mixed in and he loved it, lol, it helped the loose stools, so tomorrow I will start back with his reg food mixed with the chicken and rice and see what happens, Oh and I bring her the oatmeal shampoo to bathe him in...I pay more for his shampoo then I do for my own shampoo....But the rest of his coat is wonderful and his fur is soft and shiny,,,
