On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being as pungent as egg salad or canned tuna, where does canned tripe fall on the scale? I bought freeze-dried tripe and my dogs love it. I'm thinking about buying a can of it, but I'm scared to because of the smell. If it's worse than the canned tuna smell, I don't think I'll be able to deal with it. Has anyone tried canned tripe?
Not sure where you are located by you can purchase fresh or frozen tripe at many asian markets and likely at hispanic markets. On the West coast we have a fantastic asian market called ranch 99 and in their seafood / meat counter area are cello wrapped containers of tripe. Might be better than canned - which I suspect doesn't really stink unless its mixed with a bunch of flavorings anyway...
was the freeze dried tripe white? those are bleached and not as good as the green tripe. i've never bought canned tripe, i just always get the frozen green kind so i don't know how differently it would smell. but if you think canned tuna smells then i'm not sure you'd be able to deal with it, haha. the fresh stuff smells really really bad to me. my partner can handle it a lot better though. just imagine a very stinky barn, that's all i can imagine when i smell it. a bunch of barn animals.
Canned is BAD stinky...on a scale like you mentioned...a 15...or higher! Fresh will gag you! The pungent scents you mentioned for comparison don't hold a candle to it...it is really bad...smells like cow manure...only intensified...probably why dogs love it! LOL
Jane I was thinking of adding the Solid Gold tripe to Taquito's food but will not now that I read this. THANKS for bringing this up! I would rather not gag while feeding the pups.

Of course they can eat tuna! Any kind of fish is great for dogs, and most of them love it. Fish is a natural food for retrievers.
If you give canned tuna, buy the chunk light in water; it has half the mercury of albacore.
Mine LOVES tuna. Comes from anywhere in the house when he hears a can opening!!!! Great protien source. And yes, as Karen says, Chunk Light in water. When it's on sale it's really a cheap gourmet meal to my guy!!
Bedford gets Tripett, also. He gets the New Zealand variety & it does stink to high heaven (definitely a "15"). He eats it w/ tuna and ONLY outside. I try to mix up several servings and freeze the rest so I don't have to deal with it as often. Green tripe is like sweet tea & red velvet cake to a southerner...crazy for it.
Oh Jane, it doesn't matter how stinky it is, they will eat it so fast you will barely get a chance to catch a wiff! I ALWAYS keep a couple cans of this in the pantry, when our pregnant girls decide they do not want to eat midway for a couple of days they can always be lured with this. I know of dogs who have been sustained with life for several years on Tripett Green lamb tripe when they would eat nothing else.
