Bald Spot on Golden Doodle

Hello all!

 

I'm new to this site and this is my first post.  I have a wonderful Golden Doodle named Bongo who will be 2 in May. 

 

I searched the archives and didn't really find an answer to this question.  Hopefully someone will be able to point in the right direction.

 

Bongo has a bald spot (about the size of a half-dollar) right between his shoulder blades.  The skin is kind of flaky, but no redness.  I first noticed this after taking him to the groomer last November at which time he got a major trim.  I blamed it on the clippers getting too close.  It's now been 4 months and the hair has not grown back.  I'm wondering now if the spot was there before the grooming and I just hadn't noticed it.  I'm skeptical of that though because it's in such an obvious place and I can't imagine I would have missed it during our weekly at-home grooming.  Nevertheless, before I spend a whole lot of money on a vist to the vet, does anyone have a suggestion for a homeopathic remedy that I can try first?

Hi~wondering if you use Frontline? I know that between the shoulder blades is the place it is applied....curious if there is a connection?

No, I don't use Frontline and never have. The flea medication we use is administered in pill form.

Ah, that was all I had except what I have read i.e vitamin issue, hormonal imbalance, or allergies-no personal experience with it. I always tend to go with the better safe than sorry-so Sadie and I are on a first name basis with every employee at our local Vet Clinic....and the place is quite huge. Sending good wishes~

There is something called 'clipper alopecia". My Golden has these bald spots on his back where they shaved him for surgery. The vet also wants to check his thyroid for issues there.

One of my co-worker's goldens had this issue and there was something going on with her thyroid.

I have heard of this happening when immunizations are given between the shoulder blades, or for the implantation of the microchip. Are either of those possibilities?

Welcome to DK! I agree that it would be good to take him to the vet. It could easily be several things. Such as....allergies, thyroid, Sebaceous Adenitis (an inherited skin disorder). It would be good to have him looked at just to be sure.

I think it's unanimous...a vet visit is in order. I'll post the results just in case anyone else might have the same issue.

Did you ever get an answer? Sounds like a similar problem I am having with my pup. He is 19 months old and has a bald spot between his shoulder blades. I have taken him to the vet and no fungal or yeast infection.
