Recommendations/Reviews for Wall-Mount Dog Door

Ruckus is now able to stay alone in the house without chewing up anything that's not approved for chewing (yay!).  So we're looking to install a dog door so that he can go outside to potty while we're gone.  We've looked at local retaitailers & online for a wall-mount dog door and have found that there's quite a range of products out there.

 

Anyone have a wall-mount dog door that works really well?  I'd love to hear about the brand and/or type of door that any of you have.  Trying to pick one out on-line is a bit mind boggling. 

We live in Colorado, so need one that does a decent job of keeping closed in the wind.  Also want one we can lock up at night and when Ruckus gets to go with us on the family outings.  Thanks in advance for the input!

I have one that has double flaps and a thick plastic cover that locks and closes it for really inclement weather and bad winds. I think the brand is Pet Safe. I have the through the wall one and it works really well. Its an extra large size and both my 95# doodle and my 25# Bijon can use it. Make sure you pack insulation around really well before they close up the wall and order the second hard cover for the outside (it doesn't come with it, just one does). It's nice to be able to close and lock inside and outside when it's really cold and rainy.

This is not really an answer to your question, but it's not really a good idea for dogs to be outdoors when nobody is home. My understanding of the purpose of a dog door is so the dogs can go in and out if you are busy elsewhere in the house. I'll be interested in hearing what others who use dog doors have to say about this, but the people I know who use them keep them locked when nobody is home.

Until Jazzy came, I left the door open all day so the dogs could come in and out as they needed. I have a secure, locked gated, fenced yard that if mostly invisible from the street or other yards. The dog door on the outside is also hidden from view by a wall on one side and my patio furniture on the other. I never had a problem until Jazz, who can scale the fence. My big 95# dood, Jack never tried, but this little mini, stinker, goes right over it. So, for now, the dog door is closed until we make the fence taller.

We have three Pet Safe Dog doors and Lexi has been using them to get to her run and also to the fenced back yard. We walk her for excersize, other then that she goes outside whenever nature calls. We have always had Dog Doors and Pet Safe is a large and reputable manufacturer. Keep one thing in mind, if a 95 pound Doodle can fit thru, a small adult can get thru as well, or reach the doorlock. As far as I am concerned, if someone wants in they can always find a way in and we live in a low crime area. Also, they have to think about a large dog waiting to lick them to death if they do come in.

I'm thinking about getting a wall-mount too. But I want one that is safe and will lock up securely while we're gone for weekends. I want it so Bear could come and go while we're at home. We currently leave the sliding glass door open, but can't do it when it's too cold or too hot. So does anyone have a safe locking wall-mounted dog door that doesn't allow critters in too?

Thanks for the input. I understand the concerns of not leaving dogs outside when someone is not home, but we have a 6 foot privacy fence with a locking gate. I also am of the opinion that he can find just as many items in the home that could potentially harm him as he can find outside (a stick versus our staircase spindles as an example). So we try to minimize the risks, but in the end it works better for us to have a dog door for him to use while we're home and in case we can't get back home to him in a reasonable time frame. Thanks for the info on the door type, very helpful!

He has a great line of heavy-duty insulated dog doors that stay closed, in Winter, and are chew proof. They even have ones that work with an electronic key. This way your dog can come in, but the strays, raccoons, possums, baby bears, deer, etc. don't.
