Well, I woke up feeling doodle mommy guilt this morning. Last night about 8pm (the "bewitching hour" around here with kids!), I'm in the kitchen and see Luxie zoom out of the laundry room  with a sock in her mouth. Before I could even cross the room she swallowed it right in front of me!  I wasn't sure what to do, but had read on this site about obstructions, so I was freaking out. She's only 19 pounds and it was a HUGE sock! I don't know how she could possibly swallow a dry sock so fast! I decided to call the vet (sure that no one would answer at 8 pm), and amazingly my vet answers the line. He had me give her some hydrogen peroxide, which worked  amazingly fast, but it broke my heart to watch her!  Not only did the sock come up, but some bark, plastic, and another SOCK!  Oh my gosh, I feel awful!  Where did she get all that stuff?? Anyways, she's awake and fiesty this morning, but I've sure learned my lesson. I think I will buy that Pet Insurance today, and there will be a family meeting about keeping stuff off the floor!

Wow, Two socks!!! I'm glad you called the Vet and got her to bring it up, If left alone she may have needed surgery to get them out. So glad she's OK. ;-)
Socks are not my friends. Winston ate a sock at 4 months and had to have surgery. Two days after the surgery he passed another sock. The second sock was the one that I saw me get, the sock that caused the surgery I didn't even know he had eaten. Even with care Winston has eaten 3 or 4 more socks, luckily all have passed. I didn't see him get any of them, the door to the laundry room is never left open, I make sure that all socks have mates, and even with that there are still socks being eaten. I live alone so the troubles are ten fold with 2 adults and kids.
They are fast, it is really a wonder. Winston got a pair of tights, he had part hanging out of his mouth, I started to pull. Oh my, most was already down is throat, very scary. I'm not sure tights would have passed and throwing up might have been a problem with something so big. Winston is tall, and he will counter surf, so he can be a challenge.
This just scares me to death....I wouldn't even guess they would try to swallow a whole sock. My guys like to "shread" things, but I just never thought of them swallowing something that large. Sometimes I feel like I just don't have enough "eyes".
Wow - how can a little dog like that hold so many socks? LOL It sure is a good thing you saw her swallow that other sock. I can't imagine how frightened you were (I remember how freaked out I was when our doodle ate a dryer sheet). Doods can be little vacuum cleaners --
oh my....
Luxie you are a bad bad girl!
Good thing you saw it and acted quickly!
Mochi also is a fan of socks, but he never swallowed any, he just likes to chew it softly ( not like he wants to chew it to pieces).
I guess we'll have to have hydrogen peroxide and the syringe ready at home in Mochi's 'first-aid' kit.

Mochi used to steal socks and guarded it badly. We tried a weird way to train him, we left socks everywhere on the floor on purpose, or even handed them to Mochi, and play the 'take it' and 'drop it' game with him, he then started to think socks are not as valuable as he thought. Puppies want things that they think you want it back badly, it makes them think they've got something valuable from you.
But every dog is different, since Luxie had the record of swallowing socks, I'm not sure if you want to try the same thing as I did.
Hopefully Luxie learned a lesson that when she eats something she shouldn't, yucky liquid will get down her throat and she'll throw up.
I am so glad that Luxie is alright. It was meant to be that you were able to talk with the vet. I did have to laugh when I read that you found 2 socks! Poor Luxie. Training your kids might be harder than training Luxie - at least that's the way it is in my house...lol. We have a gate upstairs that keeps Alma out of the laundry room and the kids rooms otherwise I'm sure she would get into all sorts of things. And we played all kinds of "leave it" games when Alma was little.

Alma's a shreader and never swallows anything. She just leaves the mess behind for me to pick up. I can't imagine how you felt when you saw her swallow the sock. Good thing you were there.

Give Luxie a hug for me. It's just too bad that they don't always understand cause and effect.
Glad Luxie is doing fine. I didn't know hydrogen perioxide would cause a dog to throw up. Good to know.

My 9 mo old dog, Sara, has had a few recent mishaps. Six weeks ago she broke into a tupperware container of coffee and ate some coffee grounds. Didn't eat much and was hyper all day and into the night!!! About 3 weeks ago she ate a bar of soap - yes, an entire bar of soap. No affects from that fortunately. I was waiting to see if bubbles would come out as she pooped - but that didn't happen. :)

It's hard with puppies. You get past the potty training and start to feel too comfortable about not needing to keep a constant eye on them. It's like they purposely behave for a few weeks and then look for the worst possible thing to get into!!!
I am sorry, but I laughed out loud when you said two socks came up. That is amazing that she could swallow them. I am glad she is ok.
I am so glad she's okay, and I can't believe she swallowed two socks either! Dogs are crazy, why would you even want socks? They just happen to be their favorite thing... (sigh)
Aww! Poor Sister Luxie! Glad she is doing good today! How Scary for you! Kashmir LOVES socks! It's funny how they know they shouldn't have it and go running, so you KNOW they've got something bad. If she just walked by it wouldn't be so noticeable. Good thing they give us a hint so we can go checking! Nice that the vet answered too. Thanks so much for the info on hydrogen peroxide. Hope I don't need to use it, but it's here if I do. We are also researching Pet Insurance. Let me know what you decide on. Harlan and I keep putting it off (lack of time, of course!!!) but we really need to just purchase some. It is amazing she had so much in her tummy. Good things always come out of bad. Now it is all in the clear!!!
Kashmir sends doodlekisses to her sister Luxie!!!
HOLY SMOKES! two socks?? What the heck? So glad she brought them up. My friends dog had to have surgery two weeks ago after devouring a tennis ball obstructed her bowel. They found so much stuff in her that the tray in the OR was filled with all of the things she had ingested who knows when. What a way to cleanse!! They cleared away all of her balls and toys and cleaned the house of anything she could get into and say that she will NEVER get balls or toys again. Poor Lucy...she is an English bulldog and such a princess.
How did you get Luxie to drink the peroxide and how much did you have to give her? This could be useful information as Quincy never misses a chance to steal socks and he actually ate a latex glove one day when he was at work with my husband. He passed it a couple of hours later so I guess we were really lucky. You will have more luck with keeping doors closed than getting everyone to pick up. I never leave Quincy alone and if he leaves the room I'm in, I know he is up to no good. I only have Quincy to watch so it is a lot easier for me with no small kids to watch. I am so glad that your beautiful Luxie is ok. The one thing I didn't bargain for when we got our doodle was all the things he would get into. Life is never boring with a doodle.
