Is this a doodle thing??? Oliver always comes over to us and everyone else and sits and gives us his paw to hold...I have bever had a dog do this without trainging it to do it, and we, DH and I think it is the most wonderful thing. We love that he lays his head on our lap, and wants to hold hands and paw with us. Why would a trainor say this is a bad thing???...Makes no sense to me, but there is no way that I would discourage this, or turn my back on him when he does it. It makes him and us feel closer, and that is a good thing...He weighs around 62-65 lbs now, so he can't really crawl in our laps, although he tries, lol...I am just curious if this is a doodle thing, as it seems that so many of them do it...

I'd love to hear more about her Therapy test. Any hints? Guinness has his in two weeks. Our trainer said the same thing about not teaching any tricks until after the evaluation.
Jane -- I'll post on your page.
My two guys are completely different. Guinness doesn't want me to hold his paw....he wants me to hold his whole body. He loves to have me hold him. Murph on the other hand wants no part of this. He especially doesn't want his paw or any other part of his body to be held. He wants to be "free". If I sit on the stairs then he will lay across my lap to be petted, but he doesn't actually want me to hold him. He wants to be able to always "get away". He's actually very affectionate, but on his terms.
Hunter does this all the time! I thought that she was just confused about "shaking" which she does "sometimes"! LOL But she does love to sit and hold paws with us, we love it!
Both of our girls do this, but especially Maddie. Morgan is very gentle when she does it, but Maddie is very adamant about it. When my husband comes home from work, he likes to just sit and read the paper & unwind a little before dinner. Maddie comes over and puts her paw up on the arm of his chair and will NOT leave him alone until he holds her paw. After a little while, he says, Enough Maddie, let me read the paper! She will put her paw back up there & if he ignores her, she will give him a little "ruff", just to remind him that she is still there. So I usually will call her over to sit on the sofa with me and leave Dad alone!!
Peri doesn't want me to hold her paw, but she swats me or puts her paw on me when she wants attention. She'll come up and put her paw on my back and just hold it there. These doodles really like to use their "hands" don't they?
Callie likes to "hold hands" sometimes too! Wilbur Foster Doodle would like to hand hold 24/7
Sadie does that too! I just love it! Smiles~
Well it seems to me that we all have some very special animals living with us, some doodles and some not doodles...I for one just love when they want to be held, paw, that is,( lifting a 65 lb dog is not easy, but we cuddle on the couch) lol,,,and I wouldn't change that for anything. We also did not teach him to do that....It just happened one day, lol
I have an almost 3 yr old mini goldendoodle, Angus. Wonderful little guy ( about 34 lbs). He likes to give me his paw to hold also. It's really sweet. I got him from the Paw Pad in Deer Creek, Ill. Great breeders.
Of our three only Mariner is a paw giver and that is only occasionally. Boomer will put his head under your hand and keep doing it until you give him attention. Shayna will just jump up on the couch and sit next to you.
