For those of you who have been on here for a while: is the preferred tick control Advantix or Frontline Plus or perhaps a collar.  We are using Comfortis to control fleas but now we're into tick season (does it ever go away) - just wondering what is recommended.

Thanks

We use Advantix but I like the idea of Revolution best.

Here is something interesting that my foster " Lace" aka "Sophie's" wonderful adoptive parents sent me about Flea and Tick control products. After loosing their first Goldendoodle to cancer at a very young age they are reluctant to use any poisonous chemicals on their dogs but they live in the woods and ticks are a severe problem. They researched this extensively. It is worth posting here to give those who want alternatives some ideas.

" Did I tell you about the non-toxic flea/tick things we are trying? Bernie has a collar much like a regular tick collar but it's infused with natural essential oils. It's from Natural Research People. Sophie is trying the electro-magnetic Shoo-tags. They make shoo-tags for people to use, too. The electro-mag things seem sort of far-out, but they're widely used in Europe. We've had ticks out here for almost a full month now, and we've found just one tick attached on each dog so far. We have found a few just crawling on them, which is normal. Even the toxic treatments have never been 100% effective, so we are pretty happy. I also ordered a spray called TripleSure that includes cedar & peppermint oils, just to use as an extra measure on Sophie's feet & legs."

FYI: since I brought up Lace's name let me add one more quote. "She is so happy, Joanne. There is no doubt in my mind that we are the family for her, and Bernie was clearly meant to be her teacher. It's unbelievable, when you think of how far she's come in a short time".
This is my big worry: poison going into the dog's bloodstream. If the poison is strong enough to kill the ticks then how safe can it be for the dog. The idea of trying a natural product intrigues me - and it is something I would like to look into.
Joanne ~ I posted a question in the forum about those Shoo-tags and discussion went back a nd forth about it's effectiveness and if it is actually realistic to expect it to work.. but I worry about using front-line or advatix I like the all natural stuff... I think I'm also going to spray her with the spray we use when we go camping... it has picaridin in it... supposed to be pretty effective....???????? It's put out by Cutter..
Great info, and that's such wonderful news about Lace!
I switched from Frontline plus to Advantix. It has worked better for Webber, here in North Carolina. I had trouble with fleas in particular with Frontline and do not with Advantix.
I use Frontline Plus here in Southern California. I haven't had any problems.
We use Frontline Plus and it always worked for us. Over the winter months I only put it on every other month from Dec. to March.
We use Advantix. It has worked well (no ticks or fleas ever) but Holly and I both hate the strong smell! She usually turns in circles trying to get at it for a few minutes after it's applied. Also I accidentally squirted some across the room the first time applying it and put permanent spots on our tan leather couches. I also usually don't use the full amount because it seems like too much.
My vet recommends Vectra 3D here in California. Also keep them on Sentinel. For me it is like vaccinations, there can be reactions, bad ones, but they are rare and I think worth the risk.
Maryann, I haven't heard about Vectra 3D. Tell me more about it. Do you use it and Sentinel? nancy
