Colter is so very shy.  He runs away from me and tries to hide when I approach him-and I  don't approach him aggressively. I never look him straight in the eye and I try to get down closer to his level. If I get close enough to him to grab his collar, he pees.  I have never been around such a scared and sensitive dog.  I am not sure how to potty train him because of this.  If I even gently scold him he gets scared and pees. I have to pick him up and carry him when he gets like this because he'll run and try to hide.  Also, when he's outside, he won't pee.  He'll be out playing and come into the house and pee.  I took him out by himself (which he didn't like and tried to get back into the house) and tried to get him to go, but he always runs back to the porch.  He won't follow me around the yard at all.  He just runs away from me.

I've only had him for a little less than two weeks, though.  Will it take him longer to get used to us?

And then there's leash training.  He hates it.  He jumps rolls, pulls back.

I have never had issues like this before--the submissive/scared urination or leash training.  He is so scared/shy/timid that I don't know what to do.  When he's out playing with Cody, my Golden, Cody will accidentally run into Colter and the pup yelps and runs and hides.

Anyone else have these issues with their puppies?  He's only 4 months old, too.  Am I expecting too much from him?  Do you think he will calm down and not urinate whenever he's approached?  And what are your leash training tips.  HELP??

And, he's playing with a toy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so happy he is starting to make progress. Please keep giving us updates!
Great news!
I'm so happy to hear that he's doing better...treats (and praise) can work wonders. I think as you see him "come out of his shell" you'll also relax more and that is "infectious". Keep us posted.
Excellent :-) Keep up the good work and keep posting, please.
I got had Maggie three months ago at the age of six months. She was so afraid and timid when I brought her home, everything scared her. She still is afraid of "new" things. She couldn't go up or down stairs nor jump up on furniture. It took about two weeks before she became comfortable in her new environment and now she is the "boss" of the household. It does take some pups a period to adjust. Her half sister, Rosie, now 20 months old, had submissive urination or as we called it excitement pee but she has outgrown that, thankfully. Maggie never had that issue. Give Colter a bit of time and I'm sure he'll relax and become a wonderful friend.
Yahoo! Way to go and high five! Just keep it up. You and Coulter are on the way! Remember when you call Coulter to back away from him. Backing up stimulates the chase instinct and moving toward a dog stimulates the fear or hide instinct. Change up the treats once in awhile too, always use really small really tasty things. For ease you can put them in a small baggie and pin them to you if you don't have a store bought treat pouch.
I am thrilled to hear that things are getting a bit easier for Colter and you!
If you want a small treat that is moist (not hard and crunchy) so you can cut it up with your nails to entice Colter, my girls LOVE 'Zukes Mini Chicken' treats. My family calls them 'doggy crack' - they will do anything if they even smell one!
I buy them online, it is MUCH less expensive than retail. this site also has a coupon on their front page which covers the shipping.
