Boy oh boy... if I had donated a dollar to the DRC every time you guys heard me out on one of our 'issues'....
Here we go again... So last night Tori starts sneezing. She used to sneeze sometimes after she ate a couple of times, but that ended months ago.... but last night she sounded like someone coming down with a cold. She sneezed last night and then again on and off all day today. She woke up very lethargic today, and didn't really eat so I took her to the Vet.. she had a possible UTI 2 weeks ago, so wanted her checked again. Vet said "dogs don't usually get colds", and he did not really see anything wrong - to just watch her... she perked up at the vet, so I guess he didn't see much reason for concern. As soon as we came home she was back to just lying around (and sneezing on and off). She has gotten lively at times when the boys came home from school, people went by,etc. She ate a bit more too...She just had some food a bit ago, finished and then started barking at someone outside - and that's when this kind of snorting/ almost sounded like wheezing came on. It must have only lasted about 6 - 8 seconds but felt longer....could it be the beginning of kennel cough? I have never had a dog with that before, but my last dog did this snorting thing and he wound up w/ a tumor in his nose... I'm sure it's not that and she is only 2, but still I'm getting nervous. could it be she ate something that scratched her throat? Sniffed something up her nose (my crazy mind was thinking a bug of some kind)...Any way.. thanks for any suggestions! THANKS!
Now that I think about it...all four here didn't sneeze when they were napping or sleeping at night either!!
That's wierd. Remember mine said "beginning of canine flu"...of course if yours is anything like my Gus he could have a paper clip in his nose...or a pickle! Good luck and let me know. Everything is normal here now AND, AND the Vet actually adopted the girl I had brought in from rescue. That was the best outcome from sneezing fest here!
Well... My mother in law e-mailed me at work this morning about 10:30.. said Tori was so mopey she wouldn't even go into her house (she has an apartment in our house). She said she even felt warm, Now my mother in law is worse of a worry-wart than I am.. so I panicked... e-mailed my husband and begged him to leave work (I;m a teacher so I really can't leave) and go check on Tori, or take her to the vet ASAP.... meantime, I called the vet and they said I could bring Tori in... My husband said she was excited to see him when he got home, barked at the window and all when he pulled in the driveway, and jumped on him with her usual greeting.... off to the vet... she had a slight fever... 103. The vet checked her thoroughly - listened to stomach and chest.. looked up her nose - NO discharge in nose, chest clear, stomach sounded and felt normal. They took blood to check for Lymes.. but I doubt that b/c we really don't have the deer tick here - only dog tick and she never really goes out alone - no woods - just in our backyard with one of us. But they put her on doxycycline just in case due to her fever... so far - knock wood - I really haven't heard her sneeze more than once and haven't heard the sorting... I don't know - it's just so frustrating! Thanks so much for your help, suggestions and support!! I'll keep you informed!
ANDY - how interesting is that.... sometimes tho' when I have a cold or my kids do, we sneeze, but maybe we're not in 'slep-mode'
Well. o.k. we'll settle for no more sneezing. Why am I think of Tori all day? Oy these doglets! Glad you took her and probably good for the Vet to record the temp a little elevated. Hope all returns to normal. I was a teacher too Shelly, worry must be in our blood.
Yes! I do think worrying one of the many "occupational hazards" as I call them, of being a teacher... THANKS again! she's still a bit mopey, but not that much sneezing! I'll have to Facebook my cousins and ask where in Boca Raton they live! Don't know how long it takes for results to come back, but I will be VERY surprised if it comes back positive!
Zooey had the "cold" a few years back. Same snorting and sneezing (more than 10 times a day). And when she sneezed, it was like she was trying to expel her lungs and nose!! It went on for quite a few days, and her nose was dripping constantly, I had to use kleenex on her! After about a week, we finally brought her to see the vet. Same thing, we were told that dogs don't get the cold/flu, but the vet could not explain what she got (checked her nasal passage, listen to her chest, took temp, blood test, etc). Anyway, we were sent home with a 7 or 10-day course of antibiotics. I didn't give her the meds, I was reluctant to give it to her cos she was still really young. She got better eventually, after a few more days of snorting and sneezing. We did watch her closely to make sure that she was eating and playing well.
THANKS SO MUCH, Julie! Tori's nose isn't running that badly, but it is drippy a bit. It's crazy... if dog's don't get 'colds' then what is it?? 'The drips"??? LOL I am giving her the meds.. but just like my children... giving the meds make me a bit wary too. BUT - they DO seem to be doing something already... or - it could just be a coincidence. Hopefully tomorrow will bring her more like herself again! THANKS so much for your good wishes and input - I really appreciate everyone's input, suggestions and support.... DON"T CHA" JUST LOVE DK-ers?!
Shelly, Our Vern did not catch any of the sneezing, etc. from Fudge. I don't know what it was, but the anti inflammatory drug seemed to do the trick and Fudge is back to normal. Yes, it was very worrisome and I was just sure she inhaled something, but seems to be fine now. Good information though, if it happens again.
YES! definitely great info... I was ready to go armed with all of the suggestions from DK, but my husband took her instead... probably just as well I may have been arrested for inpersonating a Vet! LOL... hopefully shes on the road to recovery too! THANKS again!
Peri had these symptoms last fall. She had a fever too. Vet ruled out dog flu mainly because Tacky never got sick. She was mopey, sneezy, wheezy for about 10 days. Vet finally gave her some steroids which knocked it out of her...who knows???!!!! Too bad dogs can't say "hey mom I ate something" or "hey mom the leaves are really getting to me", etc....
Keep us posted.....
