We have not been able to control Mariner's seizures as well as our vet would like so we are going to go to Bromide.  Is anyone using it to control seizures?

Aw, sorry to hear that. I don't have any experience with Bromide but have read it works well in conjunction with other meds. All the best to you and Mariner~wish I could offer you more info!!
Toby has been on phenobarb and Potassium Bromide. He still had seizures while on the phenobarb,so the vet started him on Potassium Bromide in addition to the phenobarb on Feb 23. Had a seizure March 4, then again on June 5, and again on June 16. The 3 months from March to June is the longest he has gone without seizures, so we feel we really made progress since starting the Potassium Bromide. We also give valium for 24 hours after a seizure and this has been very effective in controlling the clusters.Toby was pretty sick two weeks ago and was admitted to an emergency facilty, so we are thinking that may have triggered this round of seizures. We are really keeping our fingers crossed that he will continue to make progress. Please keep us informed. I know it's a long process, the potassium bromide takes awhile to get to a therapeutic level, but hopefully it will work. How often does Mariner have seizures? Big doodle hugs to Mariner!
Mariner had a seizure Thursday and then today. Before that it was about 6 weeks ago. He tends to go for good stretches (6 weeks to 3 months) without a seizure and then has 2 or 3 within a few days. Mariner's seizures are caused by a brain injury(skull fracture) he had when he was 7 or 8 weeks old. He is on Phenobsrb (64.8 mg - 3 times a day).
We're extremely interested in reading what others have experienced with using Potassium Bromide. Our Bella has Addison's Disease as well as having seizures (seizures not related to Addison's) and the phenobarb has't been controlling the seizures so our vet also wants to start her on the Potassium Bromide. This dog really drew the "short straw" - all her littermates are healthy and happy. Bella's seizures are happening every 7-12 days.
We haven't started yet. Our vet has ordered it for us (in meat flavor).

We will keep you updated
Today is day 3 of potassium bromide. 3 ml per day of 500 mg/ml - I guess that means 1500 mg per day. We have to mix it with a little vanilla ice cream for him to take it. We have not reduced the pheno barb yet as it takes a long time for the potassium bromide to reach therapeautic levels. Although there have been no seizures since we started it is to early to tell. We have not noticed any other changes (side effects) so this is good.
That is good news... I've found that if they're going to have side effects from these meds, they show up pretty quickly. Fingers crossed that the Bromide helps in the long run. There are a lot of stories on the Epi Angels site from people who swear by it.
Sadie and I are sending health and peace wishes Mariner's way! Good to hear so far so good!
Andy, as you know I am not using Pheno or Bromide on Jasper (yet). So I am just sharing info now. A few people in my Yahoo seizure group needed to add Bromide, WHEN the Pheno on its own was not working anymore. A lot of them did have success after a while. It is VERY important to feed a LOW FAT DIET, once a dog is on Bromide! If you are not already using MILK THISTLE yet, look into it. Very good to keep the liver strong with all those drugs!
My heart goes out to you and Mariner. There seems to be a lot of seizure activity right now. You might have read my discussion. I should be sooo happy with a LONG 7 week break, without any medics, just my Natural stuff (Epi-still, Tauriene, Grain free homemade Diet) AND the shortest seizure ever. But I wanted longer. In fact I want those monsters inside our poor darlings to stop all together. I will however continue what I am doing right now. New Discussion coming up right now...
The promised update. The good news is no further seizures. The bad news is that Mariner is having difficulty with the stairs and getting up on the couch. Also lethargic. We spoke to the vet - decided to cut back on the phenobarb to see if that helps. We changed the phenobarb from 3 times to twice daily. Hopefully this is just getting used to the potaasium bromide.
That's great News - NO FURTHER SEIZURES! You go Mariner!!!
The Bromide has no liver damaging side effects, like Pheno. Are some dogs JUST on Bromide? Or does it ONLY work in combination with the Pheno?
My understanding is that it can be used alone but usually it is used with a "lite" dose of phenobarb.
