Help! About a month ago we had our backyard leveled & had new sod put down. I was concerned that when Duffy peed he would leave
burn marks on the new grass. My landscaper told me that male dogs
don't ruin the grass when they pee that it only happens with female dogs. Well, I am starting to see burn spots on my new lawn. I don't
know if what my landscaper says is true & if it is true am I feeding
Duffy food that is producing acid. I need to save this new lawn ( I have one very upset husband).
I have a male doodle and I have the same problem. It is so easy to let him out in the front yard to do his business but now with all the yellow spots in our pretty yard I am trying to walk him down the road a couple times each day. We have an area up the road from us where it doesn't bother anyone.
I have a male neutered doodle, and I also have spots in the grass, so it would be nice to know how to get rid of the spots..he will be two in January and as never lifted his leg to pee, but I like the way that he squats to pee.
As usual, Adina is right on the money on all counts! I still have to laugh when I hear that old wive's tale about male dogs not burning the grass...if they lift their legs on a tree, etc., of course they don't burn the grass...'cause the urine doesn't touch the grass! If your male squats like a female, he'll burn the grass like a female. You will also hear that it's caused by hormones in the females' urine...also wrong. It's the chemical composition of urine, as Adina said.
I've been giving Kodie and Tannie treats that help with the nitrogen in the pee...not sure how it works, but it does seem to help. I've also got a spray that I spray on any browning areas that I notice......it's suppose to help breakdown the nitrogen in the urine....and, it's colored green...so it really camoflauged the spots also.......I do know that if you keep the grass watered heavily it helps a lot also.
I'll try anything.....!
see THAT is a product that has potential...but now I want to know how. I'll have to pick up a batch and call the company--curious minds want to know how =)
We keep a watering can filled with water and whenever we put Holly out, we note where she pees and thoroughly wet down the area. We have tried an additive to the water which was "supposed" to neutralize the urine. But, it didn't seem to do much better than plain water.
I am seriously considering replacing my grass in the ares she usually pees with a more sturdy variety.
I really don't want to tell her "don't pee there" because it just might confuse her. She has been doing really well since she was 3-months old.
