I am starting this now, as my town celebrated yesterday, but I know some people are celebrating today and Monday. Everyone can add throughout the weekend. How did your doodles do with the fireworks? I wasn't sure how Darwin would react, I was expecting anything from him barking like mad to falling asleep during them. It was more the latter. He seemed mildly interested in the first few booms, then spent the rest of the time laying in the grass and begging for potato chips. I should have figured, he doesn't get bothered by much.
We took him to the park that a carnival was being held at, and the biggest challenge ended up being all the food dropped on the grass. We gave more "leave it" commands than we have in a whole month put together!
Sophie got very anxious with the first few firecrackers. We stayed home but there is a large local display that we can hear and see. She started panting and would not take treats we offered to try to distract her. Thankfully we had taken her out for the last potty trip before the noise started. She was restless but went up to bed with us and eventually went to sleep. She has a difficult time with storms also. It does seem to be gradually getting a little better.
Ella, my 5 month old, seemed to be oblivious to the fireworks going off around the neighborhood, but Maggie, my 2 year old, doesn't like them at all. She runs upstairs and hides in our closet! Tonight I took both the dogs for a walk and one of the neighbors started blowing off fireworks. Maggie was nervous, but we continued our walk. When we returned home, she ran up the stairs again. She did do better this year; last year I couldn't even get her to come outside!
Gracie Doodle has no issues with fireworks. We have Sea World nearby and every night at 9:45 they set off a fireworks display. But, she has never been out in a park right under them so I have no idea how she would respond to that. But, her entire life there have been fireworks every night so it is no big deal. There were a few firecrackers near by that were set off and she seemed to ignore those as well. We locked her in the house with the TV on and went to a neighbors for the "viewing". When we came home she was in her special spot that we call "the baby spot" sound asleep. Nothing got to her at all! I am so glad she is such a laid back easy going girl.
Yep, Sea World does them every night at closing time! It sort of takes the fun out of a "big event" of fireworks. All I have to do is drive over the hill and park on a street facing Sea World and get out and set up my tripod. I may give it a try in the next few weeks. We also use to have them every night the San Diego Padres were playing at home and won! Now that the ballpark is downtown we can look out our windows and see if any fireworks are going off. I'm not sure they are doing it this year though???? They have been winning but I am usually in my computer room so I haven't noticed and we gave up our season tickets!
Kachi tries to make a point of barking at every thing new that happens in the house, backyard and front yard! But the one thing that usually makes all dogs go nuts...fireworks- Nothing! Not a growl, not a head cock, not low throaty growl (which we get at the sound of thunder)...nothing! Completely unfazed by all the commotion! And since Halle takes ALL her cues from her big brother, she was equally as unfazed as he was!! It was great...and surprising!
I was concerned about Callie because she does have a fear of thunder, but the fireworks' boom didn't seem to disturb her. That said, she didn't eat on Saturday, Sunday, or until about 10pm on Monday (she was fine with treats so I didn't worry that she was sick). I thought we were in the clear until my neighbors were making a clapping noise in their home (townhouses - share walls) and Callie was an unglued mess for an hour and I could literally not lift her out of my lap. I eventually had to just stand up and kinda dump her on the floor because I HAD to go to the bathroom.
We took Banjo to a carnival/music/fireworks festival.....lots of people, loud music and of course the fireworks and he seemed to enjoy every bit of it! Although, the next morning when we woke and opened his crate door he stayed and slept in for another hour and a half!!! Guess us old folks wore him out!!!
Our fireworks were a washout, we couldn`t see anything but we did get lots of noise. Loud noises don`t seem to bother Quincy at all. He just pranced along carrying the umbrella and giving everyone a chuckle. I didn`t get his picture as it was raining and I couldn`t take the camera out.
I stayed home and babysat my daughters 2 dogs and my 2, I could see the Fireworks from my backyard. Knightly my daughters GD couldn't care less Emma her lab mix barked at every boom, Bear so old couldn't hear them and my poor Gus kept running to the front door when Emma barked and did his "great" sit stay waiting for someone to visit.
