Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have heard and read on many websites that the curlier the coat, the less the shedding.  I have also read that the amount of curl has nothing to do with the amount of shedding.

I would like a non-scientific poll:  Does your curly coated doodle shed?  Please tell us the generation (f1, f1b, f2, etc), age, and how curly your doodle is.

I'll start: my dog Webster is an f2 chocolate goldendoodle.  He is 1 1/2 yrs old and has a fairly curly coat.  I would classify him as a very light shedder.  If I haven't brushed him for a couple weeks (I know, I know, shame on me!), I will get a couple brushfulls of hair.  I see an occasional doodle tumbleweed in the corners of my wood floors.  I do not see any hair on  clothes or furniture.

Here is Webster at 5-6 weeks old and now - it was evident that he would be curly and he definitely is.

I'd love to hear from others about the relation of curly coats and the amount of shedding!

I wouldn't say it's an absolute fact, as there are always exceptions... but it seems to be a general rule of thumb that usually helps. Darwin is wavy/curly and doesn't shed. He used to shed a little during his coat change but stopped fairly quickly. Webster is gorgeous!
Gus has a very tight curl (F-1B) and he doesn't shed. He's just over 4 years old.
I would agree with Camilla-that it is a good rule of thumb (with exceptions). Tara is a mini ALD and is wavy curly and doesn't shed now that she is past the puppy coat:

My doodle is 1 year old and he has never shed...not even during his coat change. He used to have straighter hair, but quickly turned curly. His mother is a goldendoodle and his father is a standard poodle, so he is quite a curly boy... I guess technically he is 75% poodle?? Your doodle is adorable and seems like he will be super curly!! With the curls and nonshedding, however, come big time matting. I comb my boy a lot and I will admit that I also cut some matts out with scissors if I have to. I know it's awful but you really can't even notice...lol my groomer would yell at me.
Peri is an F1 and has slightly wavy hair and does not shed. I was actually very surprised she didn't end up shedding - breeder thought she might but I didn't care. Here is a photo at around 9 weeks. The next is one was taken 4 months ago at her bday (she is currently short for the summer and you cannot tell her hair type):

Hudson is an almost 2yr old F1B with a fairly curly coat. He looks more like a Poodle, especially when shaved down for the summer. I do get hair on the brush from tangles/mats, but he doesn't shed hair around the house at all. He was more wavy as a puppy, and then got curlier as he got older.
My cream doodle, Shayna 3 year old, Labradoodle F2, very tight wooly curl, since birth....she gets very hot, so I tend to not let her hair get too long, so I don't really have issues with knots and she never has shed. My other baby girl, Loki, is a Double Doodle, 7 months, has loose, flowing curls, that get straighter as it gets longer, but has never shed. Loki is also a FB2.

Lexi is two, she is poodle curly, tight curls, but no shedding at all. Billy is 10 months, not sure if he is still losing his puppy coat or not, but he has thin straight hair and does shed a little....no where near what a pure Golden sheds tho. Both Billy and Lexi are F-1 Doodles....although, Lexi is often accused of being a Poodle.

Ned is multigenerational. He does not shed except during grooming. He has some curly areas but really his coat is pretty straight overall. It is poodle thick and cottony.
Ned at 3 1/2 months:

Ned now:

But people do think he is a poodls.

Clancy is a rescue but probably is an F1 with a wavy coat.
He sheds!

Awe... look at Ned's cute little puppy face! And oh my - how stunning they both are now!
Thank you, Shelly. I think so too.
My Sadie is an F1b...mother is a goldendoodle and father is a miniature poodle. She has NEVER shed. Her cost
is curly and when I brush her, some hair will come out on the brush but not much.
