Our "Irish" doodle is always very listless for about 24 hours after applying her tick medication.  Is this quite common in most dogs or should I be concerned and ask the vet to recommend a different brand?

We have noticed Snickers sleeps more the day after his application  however he also gets his heartworm medicine the same day so not sure if that is why. I would ask the vet though to make sure.
Robin -

You should never give the heartworm and the tick medicine together. They should be given about 2 weeks apart.
really! i have never been told this before!
The vet said they could be given at the same time. Why did you hear they couldn't be given together?
There are a few reasons. If your dog is having a reaction to one of the two meds you will be able to tell which one it is. Another reason is that they are really both "poisons" and both together can cause problems where seperately they mibht not cause any - the additive effect. Both types of medications are known to lower the seizure threshhold in dogs prone to seizures.
I didn't know this... thank you!
Oh it's definitely the tick med for sure b/c we give the heart worm pill on a different day in the month and this does not affect her the way the tick med does. We get our tick med directly from our vet - it comes in a brown bottle and it smells like eucalyptus -
I've never noticed that with my Doods. What brand are you currently using?
I haven't noticed a change in behavior with heartworm or tick medicine. Maybe ask your vet?
