Sadie has become less fond of baths, but had one yesterday. It seemed to both of us it was a longer than usual bath-so, following it she was doing her usual celebrating where she runs like crazy wet doodle rubbing her face on her bed(s)-one in bedroom one in living room throwing her toys in the air while I towel dry her every chance I get and mostly laugh at how silly and adorable she is...and then while on the living room bed-she keeled over sideways-totally immobilzed-body in a complete rigid spasm but breathing fine, and her eyes were open. Her gaze wasn't fixed and she could follow my finger but she clearly couldn't move-and wasn't responding to my voice. This lasted 3 minutes. Then, I could see she was back, looked confused-happy to see me but still wasn't moving for a minute and a half. Then she reached a paw out to my shoulder, and gave me a big huge kiss like I had just come home. WHEW. I let her rest, she was exhausted, but I did make sure she could move all her limbs-she was not incontinent like with her grand mal seizures-she slowly got herself up and seemed a little off for a couple hours, kept greeting me like I had just returned home, almost like she forgot I was there? I left a message right away for her Vet. Still waiting for a return call. Then this morning, while brushing her she was laying belly up on her blanket on a bed-and just her right front and hind leg began to spasm. It lasted less than 2 minutes, but certainly has me concerned she is having some breakthrough seizures with her current level of phenobarbitol. I have always been worried with the water and seizures-so, I am thankful she was out of the tub before the seizure began yesterday! Somehow though I know, I would have found the strength to lift her out of that tub had I needed to-with a 10 lb lifting restriction or not! Thanks for listening seizure parents!

Just remembered the local College's field where we play ball often with Sadie had a pesticide application last week. We avoided it longer than what the lawn company suggests (only 24 hours) we went with 4 days-but thinking about it-she had her ball.........so, maybe ingested some of the pesticide? When I spoke to her Vet she only wanted me to bring Sadie in if she had a 3rd seizure within this 24 hour period.....but, I am going to call her back-now that I have recalled this piece! I think I am so careful-and yet.....I know pesticides can cause neurological symptoms.
So sorry to hear about that. I hope Sadie is feeling better and you too.
Thanks very much John! So far nothing else today-since this morning when I was brushing her, so we are through the 24 hour time frame where 3 would be extremely worrisome. Not that I am not worried terribly about 2, but I am taking things as they come. Sadie seems much more oriented this evening-she even played a little ball and one would never know anything was off based on how well she can catch a ball! I didn't want her to run too much so I was just tossing underhand to her and she knows how to toss it back which is very cute. So, she was sharp and seemed to be herself-happy, ate well etc. So-that's all good!
I'm sorry Sadie is going through this. At least the seizures seem mild and she was in good spirits afterward. I hope she continues to be in good spirits and has no more episodes.
Thanks Karen-yes, her spirits are good, and this is very unlike what her process was with the grand mal seizures. I am grateful for that! She actually has a little better focus this evening than the last couple evenings-so, maybe we were seeing some kind of aura type activity? She was a little far off, hard to pin point what wasn't right, but something wasn't quite right. Tonight-her eyes look clear, she seems sharp more responsive and alert. It is hard to see her confusion immediately following an episode-but, she is easily and quickly reassured, Which is great!
It's good that she's doing better. I know this stuff is tough on you. Hang in there. How often has she had seizures? Remember the goals of treatment are to reduce the seizure activity to a minimum and let her have a quality life. Our goal with Mariner is to keep the seizure down to less than once every six months. Please continue to let us know how Sadie is doing.
UPDATE
Thanks for the Sadie support, the update is mostly good. She hasn't had any additional seizure activity. But, she has gone from her usual self to "off". She isn't eating much, and she is super sleepy. The Vet just wants me to write everything down, but if she doesn't improve by tomorrow morning-I will bring her in no question. Little things can snowball pretty quickly in Sadie's case-she is very stoic. So, when she is the quiet way-all I can do is wonder....hopefully she is just a little postictal/or over tired from 2 seizures in 12 hours last week, and she had a little routine change last week (an extra daycare play day)! I may just be borrowing trouble that isn't mine! Hope so! Again-thanks seizure parents!
Hoping for continued improvement for Sadie!
Thanks Karen! Love to Jack~
Fingers crossed that she's just tired today, and is back to her old self tomorrow! I am always reading into things that aren't seizure related--I thought Quinn was having a mild seizure last week, until I realized it was the hiccups. :) Keep us updated on Sadie's progress.
Thanks Amanda! Oh too funny it was hiccups! :-) sounds a little like our house! Love to Quinn~
Another Update! Sadie's eating again-and seems to be back to her usual energy level. So, I think we just keep in mind another thing to add to the list of lowering her seizure threshold is lawn pesticide applications within a week time frame. Plus, her heartguard and frontline which we already knew. Does anyone suggest we use something other than the frontline and heartguard? I think we use them mainly because they work and thus far she hasn't reacted to them...but, I have no specific product loyalty if I am doing something I shouldn't. Thanks all~
