Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi everyone,

I have a 3 year old Goldendoodle who is very tall and weighs between 65 and 70 pounds. (Spencer)  I also have a 5 month old Standard "Teddy Bear" Goldendoodle (Doug) who is 5 months old and only weighs 32 pounds.  The breeder thought he would weigh between 60 and 70 pounds (because of his stocky Retriever-like legs and big feet)   His father is a smallish English Golden and his mom is an average/big sized Standard Poodle)   I have looked at the puppy growth charts and Doug weighed about 22 pounds at 4 months, so double that and he should weigh around 44 pounds at a year.  (We will love him no matter how big he gets)

Has anyone had a Standard Goldendoodle weigh so little at 5 months.  Has anyone had a doodle grow a lot after 5 months?

Thanks,
Mimi

My doodle is 5 months old today and weighed the same at 4 months as your doodle Doug. She is about 32 lbs now as well. My breeder predicted that she would be about 50-55 lbs and that's about the track she's on! The rule of thumb is that you double the weight at 4 months and add 10, so yours should be about the same. I have seen some take off with a later growth spurt, but I really don't think that that's typical! :) But really, weighing this much at 5 months is totally average from what I've seen... doodles come in all sizes and they're all wonderful! :)
Thank for responding! Your doodle is so cute! Do you have recent photos?

Beautiful guy! Seems like he'll weigh 50-60 lbs, and takes after the smallish Golden dad.

Porter was 25 lbs at 14 weeks--sorry I don't have his four month weight. He was pretty much done growing by 1 yr, at 65 lbs. Both of his parents were about 40 lbs :-) There was no false advertising though, I new he was going to be bigger than them...weightwise. He is about the same height, I suspect.
Our girls continued adding the odd lb here and there up until they were around 2. They slowed way down around 8 months and stayed the same for several months, then picked up here and there. Here is how they ended up compared to the formula.

Sophie -- 4 month weight was 23 lbs. S/b 46-56 lbs == is is currently 53 lbs.
Lucy -- 4 month weight was 23.5 lbs so she should have been 46-56 lbs == she is currently 67 lbs.

Around 4 months was the only time that their weight was similar. Normally Lucy was about 5 lbs heavier than Sophie up until the end when she ended at +14 lbs.

They are built very different as well. Although neither is real tall, Lucy is very lg boned and stocky and Sophie is very small boned and petite. They are liter mate sisters.
Thanks for replying. I don't know why I am so curious about how big he will be. I just want him to be closer in size to my other dood, I guess, although it doesn't really matter.
I think it's normal to be curious, although it doesn't sound like you are concerned or will be dissappointed either way. He may be bigger than the forumla's prediction...(44-54lbs). Our Murphy was 28 pds at 4 months, just around 54-55 pds at one year and is now 63. And by no means on the heavy side. DH calls him "skinny", Vet calls him "perfect". His weight did exactly as Lucy and Sophie's did "They slowed way down around 8 months and stayed the same for several months, then picked up here and there."
10-15 pds difference doesn't seem that big to me now. I used to be concerned about weight, but it is such a non-issue unless you have a 20 pd'er and a 60-80 pd'er in the same house, but even they would get used to how to play together.
Teddy is adorable. We have Lexi, a 2 1/2 year old Goldendoodle. Her Father was also an English Golden Doodle and her Mother a standard Poodle. She is a picky eater and weighs only 37lbs. I doubt she will gain much more weight. Our second Doodle Billy is one year old, Mother a poodle, father a Golden and weighs in at almost 66 lbs, His coat is wavy, non shedding and Lexi looks like a typical Poodle coat, tight curls, also non shedding. I guess you never know about their size, but ya gotta love our Doodles!
I think he'll go 50-55 and he certainly is a handsome cutey. Don't worry to much about play vs. size. By the time full growth occurs your dogs will have it all worked out.
When Charli was 5 months old she weighed 29 lbs. and was 19" tall.
Now around 16 months old, 27" at her shoulder and weighs 49 lbs. She is so skinny that her hip bones stick out.

I was always asked 'how tall will she be', my answer was 'when she stops I will know' - sounds obnoxious but with a doodle how can you tell? I never saw her parents - she is from an Amish Puppy Mill. All I do know is that she is tall, skinny, silly and just fantastic!
When I saw your Charli tree video, I thought, she is one tall, skinny doodle! I bet she is like my husband's childhood standard poodle. Stanley could easily rest his head on the dining room table. Porter is built like Samantha. I'd love to see them all together again.
If you are concerned about them playing together if they are different sizes..... Ned is 27 pounds 17" tall and Clancy, our rescue doodle (we think perhaps English goldendoodle), has a very retrieverish body - short 19" tall, stocky - 63 pounds. Ned is now the alpha dog at our house. He and Clancy play together with no problems. Only once since we got Clancy last March has there been a size problem. We were at a dog park and Clancy was chasing another dog and ran right into Ned and just mowed him down. Ned yelped, got up and continued playing.
Doug is a cutie. He looks just like our Daisy did at that age. Her dad is a small poodle---1/2 standard-1/2miniature. He is about 35 lbs just like Daisy is now at 2+ years old. Daisy hit 35 lbs at 6 months and hasn't varied by more than a pound since. Here she is at 5 months.

Her mom was a 70 lb english cream retriever. Dad's genes are very dominant.
Our Maggie on the other hand has very dominant mom genes. Same dad but differnt mom. The mom however was also a 70 lb english cream retreiver. Maggie is 18 months old and has been 70 lbs since she was a year old. She is built just like her mother---and sheds some too.
