I believe people can change and redeem themselves... but I hate the thought of this guy having ownership of a dog, ever. How do you all feel about it?

Amen. Forgiving him and giving him a second chance doesn't have anything to do with letting him have a dog. He should never own a dog again. That is one of the consequences of what he did. He should go work at the ranch that has the dogs that were rescued from his operation. When they are all rehabilitated maybe he will be, but I doubt it. A character disorder doesn't change in any major way.
No you are not being narrow-minded Frannie. If there's one thing I've learned at my ripe old age and as a lawyer is that People Don't Change! Least of all someone who did something like Michael Vick did. I'm sorry but where was his mother's influence before the dogfighting? Did she just spring full grown after he gets out of prison? I don't think so. He is a thug and he will remain a thug and no one in their right mind should give him a goldfish, let alone a dog. No one's going to monitor him, they don't have enough probation officers and parole officers to monitor people getting out of jail and prison. He's just looking to do that so he can get his endorsements back. Please . . . .
They don't need probation officers in this case. The media scrutiny is putting him in a fishbowl right now. For those who aren't football fans, MV is on the fast track to this year's Super Bowl and possibly the MVP award.
And there was his forgiveness to be allowed to play in the NFL again - nothing more is deserved..
As far as his mother goes, anyone who has adult children knows that you can only help them when they are willing to accept your guidance and help. "You were right, mom, I should have listened to you."
I paid no attention to my mother's advice when I was in my twenties, and lived to regret it. Later, i understood what she'd been trying to teach me. it takes some of us longer to grow up, I guess.
AMEN Deborah!
Karen, I don't think this is a simple issue of not taking mommy's advise to not kill/torture and neglect animals. This is a serious psychological disorder that take more than jail or mommy to fix. I feel it's all PR related and he has an agent and marketing people behind his money making career and don't give a hoot about his illness or any dogs that come in contact with him. He can SAY all he wants about how he's changed. But unless he's had years of therapy and is on some kind of psych drugs, he's not "cured". And having people scrutinizing him is not a cure either. No one is with him 24/7. Would you let Jack go live with him?
Yup, I feel it is a PR thing as well. If a part of his sentence is to never have a dog or animal again, so be it. He doesn't deserve one. I saw him speak, he sure doesn't sound like he talks from the heart.... I don't care how you are raised, or who you hang out with, it is simply not normal to kill dogs l in the manner he did.
No, but I wouldn't let Jack go live with half the people on DK. Very few people could live up to my standards of how I think a dog should be cared for. (Actually, I wouldn't let him go, period, but that's a different story.)
I have read extensively about the crimes that led to MV's imprisonment and his return to society, and it is not really a case of his doing what he did because he has a sadistic streak that causes him to derive pleasure from torturing animals. It is a cultural and socioeconomic thing. I am in no way escvusing what he did, but I feel that if you're going to talk about someone's psychological make-up, you really do have to put the actions in context.
I'm often criticized for being judgmental about the way other people care for their dogs. For example, it really drives me crazy that anyone, anywhere, keeps dogs outside. But every time I say something about someone who does this, I'm jumped on with "it's their culture", or "they have to be educated." I wonder why this doesn't apply to Michael Vick. It feels funny to be on the opposite side of the argument for once, me defending and asking people to have tolerance, and others being the ones to judge someone they don't know.
I'm not going by what he says, either. I'm going by what I've read that others have observed. Not his mother, either. Impartial reporters and observers, some of whom were ready to crucify him. I think it's just as wrong to believe you know what's in someone else's mind and heart when it'as a celebrity as it would be if it were one of us.
I think there are some constants on earth morality wise, no matter what your culture is.Torturing innocent animals for entertainment is recognized by most as wrong. Keeping a dog as a backyard pet, although not a good choice, doesn't qualify as torture. So I really don't think it's a fair comparison.
I do agree that there are cultures that condone things we wouldn't. Take bull fighting as an example. Obviously wrong to me, but others view it as a cultural tradition that they would never want to get rid of. But it used to be so much more barbaric than it is now, and is even banned in places. Because more and more people agree that it's wrong. I really don't think that his culture was/is so different that it would in any way condone torturing innocent dogs for pleasure. I agree that some people in his culture might ignore their conscience for personal gain, but not most.
If he didn't feel that it was wrong, then why did they all take such pains to conceal what they were doing? It wasn't just because they knew it was illegal. It's because he wouldn't want the media, his fans, the general public, to know what he was doing. Because he knew it was wrong, and that he would get bad press for it.
I don't think I'm judging him overly harshly just because he is a celebrity. I would despise any person who did what he did, famous or not. I don't know what is in his mind, but I do know his actions. And his actions tell me that he has... issues.
Couldn't agree more, Sue
We just watched an episode of Pit Bulls & Parolees the other night, and they got a Bulldog into the rescue that had been a bait dog. It showed in graphic detail an actual dog fight. I said to my Hubby "Michael Vick sat and happily watched that happen," it made me sick. I think that him getting a Dog just to prove that he "genuinely cares," is disgusting. I hope he never gets to touch another living animal again.
