Prospective Owner looking for advice

My husband and I have decided that it's time for a dog.  Our first thought was to rescue one from a shelter but we're limited to what we can have because of our allergies. We also want to make sure we own a dog that fits our active lifestyle.  We have a friend with a Golden and we absolutely love the dog - but allergy flair ups really prevent us from owning one.  So we're thinking that a goldendoodle would be the best dog for us.  Unfortunately we don't know of anyone who owns one so we've never had the opportunity to meet one.  Of course we understand that there is no true hypo-allergenic animal (except for maybe a hairless cat - but....).  So my question is, do any of you know of a breeder in the New Jersey area that would allow us to visit a doodle or two to see if our allergies stay in check?  I've read that most don't allow this but we don't live on a farm or have kids or have any other animals so I would think we're not going to carry any diseases. 

It may turn out that a doodle isn't for us.  But from all the research we've done, the intuition of the golden and the intelligence of the poodle would make for the perfect fit.

Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions would be extremely helpful.  Thank you so much for your time.

I do know that when Rosco shakes...the air is temporarily filled with Rosco fur.  Not so good if I had allergies.

JD, too. If he's standing where the sunlight hits him, he looks like a snowglobe. Truly an amazing effect.

I think it's pretty well established that the more shedding there is, the more dander there is.

That's the main reason non-shedding dogs are better choices for allergy sufferers.

Kristin, My cousin adopted a poodle from a rescue and they are in love with the dog. They are in MD and I would be happy to ask them what agency they used if you are interested. Good luck in your search.

There are quite a few good poodle rescues around the country. Just about every area of the country has one. A search for "poodle rescue" will bring up a lot of options and info.

I haven't had time to read all the posts here, but did anyone recommend you look at the Recommended Breeders Group? You may find some in New Jersey.  That is where I found our breeder.

I hope I won't be shot by this doodle loving group here, but poodles as mentioned generally are hypoallergenic, as are Siberian Huskies, and Airdales.  All fit an active lifestyle.  ALD doodles are more apt to be hypoallergenic as a group than other doodles simply because they are about 5-7 generations into breeding ALD to ALD.  My husband is allergic to dogs.  Our huskies never bothered him although they shed buckets of hair.  Our current ALDs do not bother him either.

I would not bother with a breeder who would not let you spend some time at their home given you circumstances.  You can take enough precautions.
