What's in a name!?

I go a bit mad when it is time to name a pet. My mind just goes around and around until I have found the one that feels right. Sometimes, it happens immediately--but other times, it is a struggle. part of the struggle is finding a name that my husband will agree to--I like cute-sy names and he likes formal names like David or simple names like Bob --problem is we know people with both of those names!

With Mattie, it was easy--she had already been called Addie by her previous owner and my husband wanted to call her Matilda--if I called her Mattie,  we'd have a formal name and a cute-sy name! Lyric was even easier--she had also been named already and we didn't want to change it and confuse her--her full name is Lyric Contata and yes, hubby uses the whole thing. I often call her "Leery"--there is the cute-sy thing again.

So, now to the new puppy--I am keeping one of the males from Lyric's litter. He has such pronounced black and white colors that my breeder (who is using him in her breeding program as a stud dog) wanted to name him something that has the idea of a piano...like Piano man. But she also likes Italian names--so I came up with Ebony and Ivory in Italian--Ebano Avorio. What a handle for a 4 pound pup!

The breeder likes it and of course, my husband plans to call the poor dog the entire name (which will take some practice...) And me? Well, i think I will call him "Rio"! It's cute-sy! (and we live on a river--so there you go) Other pups in the litter with names from their new owners are "Rafi" and Zeus".

There are some great names for doodles on this site--I'd love to know how everyone came up with them--do they have a special meaning or are they just cute?

I love this post because no one ever understands my male doodle's name when I tell them.  Seamus (pronounced Shay mus) is Irish for James....my husband, who is 100% Irish has always LOVED this name and wanted it for a son's name someday...well, he ultimately settled for using this name for our dog.  =)   As for our little one, Stella Dora is a take off the Italian cookie brand...Stella D'Oro.  I'm Italian and my grandparents fed me these cookies everyday in the summer when they babysat me...so the name brings back good memories.   =)  lol we'll see if I, someday, put this much thought into naming children...

I have also told this story before:  Webber was named by my sister when I told her I had to rob my retirement account with UBS/Paine Webber to pay for him.  Seda, means "silk" in Spanish.  Her coat felt like silk to me when I first picked her up.  The breeder named her Ayala and I changed it to Seda because It was so awkward to say Webber and Ayala.

I originally named my girl Adelaide from the main female character in Guys and Dolls, the musical. It turned out not to fit her since she's more uh... dumb... so I named her Sunny after her disposition and creamy caramel color.

Our pup is named Harper after Harper Lee.  We tossed around some food names since she is chocolate covered, but none of them really fit.  As a joke my husband likes to pretend her middle name is Pot de Creme.

Peri is short for Peruna the pony, the mascot of DH & my college!  Go Ponies!!!!!!!!

My husband is a Purdue Boilermaker and that wouldn't have worked. We did think about Hoosier since we are both from Indiana, but IU (Hoosier mascot) is our biggest rival, so that shot that idea. Plus whenever we are trash talking with the relatives who attended IU, we change the name to Losers. Love your idea!

Rio is super cute!  I can't wait to see him all grown up.

My husband, like so many others it seems, was picky about the names.  His family had always used some type of theme to name their animals and so he grew up naming his animals after singers.  He had an Otis (Otis Redding), Ree (Aretha Franklin), and Marshall (Marshall Tucker).  So when it came time to name our babies nothing would do but for us to use a theme.  Since he is such a rabid Boston fan we decided to go with a sports them and use New England based teams.  Our first two are both based on the Red Sox and their names are Fenway (the name of the baseball stadium) and Dustin Pedroia (my husband's favorite player, the second baseman for the Sox).  Looking back we should have gone with Wally instead of Dustin, but we can't change it now!  In any case they get called by one of their nicknames most of the time anyway :)

I too see a pattern--wife picks name, husband rejects it, wife picks another name, husband rejects it..finally wife picks a name that husband likes or husband picks a name that wife can live with!

LOL Kelli!  Tori's name also has a hidden 'twist'... we tell people we also named her after Joe Torre (pronounced tori for you non-baseball DKers).... the great YANKEE baseball manager!  LOL

When it was time for me to pick a name for my dog I narrowed it down to two names, Bella & Bindi. I decided that when I met my puppy I would know what to name her. I had seen pictures of her but I had to meet her. She was Bindi from the first moment I met her. Bindi is the name of Steve Irwin's daughter, and since she was Australian labradoodle I thought it fit her well. She really looks like a Bindi and I think it's a unique name as well. If I could affrord it I would get another labradoodle. Her brother is being mated with by breeder Ivylane Labradoodle. Maybe I'll hit the lottery!!!!

We almost named Tori Bindi, or Cobber (which is australian for friend) but I thought Cobber sounded too masculine for a girl... hopefully we will be able to get another aussiedoodle, but a male and name him Cobber (for Tori's friend/mate as they say in australiaand my boys' friend)
