Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I came across an add on kijiji (local classifieds) for an australian labradoodle looking for a new home. His owner claims she works too much and does not have time to excersize him. He is two years old and looks very sweet. She is asking $1250 for him, saying it is because she paid $2500. She listed the breeder who he was purchased from, so I checked the website and it seems like a reputable breeder and has mention of a contract although the details aren't clear. I e-mailed this lady telling her that most breeders have it in their contract that they must be rehomed back to them. She hasn't gotten back to me and I am wondering if I should contact this breeder before she sells him to someone who might not be able to give him the best life? I want him for myself, I just can't really afford the fee she is asking and I can't stop thinking about him!!

I received an e-mail back from the breeder this evening. Here it is.

Hi Candy
Thank you so much for your e-mail, I had no idea about this. She even sent
me an email in October 2010 with pictures and saying; "Wally is such a good
friend with my soon and we love him all a lot, he is a wounderful
addition to our family" her words......I tried to call her and get in touch
with her, but so far no luck. I looks like she took the add of kijiji.
And yes, you are right she did have to sign a contract.
Kind Regards,
Hug your doodle
It really upsets me that she did not contact the breeder, when in fact there was a contract requiring her to do so. Responsible breeders have these in place to prevent their puppies from ending up getting passed around, or in a bad home. I hope the breeder has luck in contacting her. DH just shook his head at me when I told him, but I would have brought Wally home in a SECOND! ;)

I'd write the breeder and say you are also interested in the dog but you want to go about this the correct way.  Let us know what you do and how it works out.
I agree with Joanne, definitely contact the breeder, and please let us know the outcome.
I think it is fine to contact the breeder.
I agree that you should contact the breeder.  Also, if this woman really loves her Doodle but can't keep him you would think that price would not be a factor.  If she knew you were a Doodle lover and owner and so involved with Doodles, she would be happy to change her asking price just for the peace of mind that her Doodle is going to a good home!  I hope for you that something works out.  Keep us posted!
Thanks for your responses, I have e-mailed the breeder and will let you know what they say!

Yes keep us posted!  I think you did a good thing.

It always makes me sad when owners rehome because they don't have time.  Not that it would ever happen, but if I ever could not take care of my dogs, I would give them to someone if I trusted they would be in good hands.

I wonder if she isn't contacting the breeder knowing what her contract says.  I have no idea how the rehoming works through the breeder but I doubt that the owner gets any money back.  So wonderful owner that she is - she not only wants to tear her dogs heart in two - she wants to recoup some of her costs.  It really takes all kinds.  I think just like there is the Sex Offender Register - there should be a Dog/Cat Offender Register.

Well most breeders don't even charge for re-homes, so I doubt they give money back to the owner doing the re-homing.

I have to agree with you Jane, some people just do not deserve to have a dog.  You would think her top priority would be finding him a good home.
I agree Jane, it could be possible that she is trying to recoup her costs.  Maybe she hopes the breeder won't find out.

I know my breeder offers 3/4 of the purchase price if you return your dog within the first year and 1/2 of the purchase price thereafter. I agree that it is totally selfish of her to want any of her purchase price back, her first priority should be that he go to a good home. I haven't heard back from neither her or the breeder, but I am hoping the right thing is done for 'Wally' :)

I would contact the breeder..... let us know what happens...  poor thing.
