In our golfing community you can't really do ANYTHING to your house or yard without getting approval from the powers that be.  So I had a fence company come over and do up a proposal to install an area across the back of our screened lani that would give Rooney a place to play outside without me having to worry about him dashing away from me or from a alligator lurking at the edge of the lake.  Don't worry - I would not be leaving him there unattended.  I then found out that I couldn't have a fence if there isn't a 20ft setback from the lake - which I am short of.  Major bummer.  I figure that if I can't find a way to get a fenced area - Rooney won't be able to get a sister - I would just not feel that I could keep two puppies safe.  So here is what I did.  I called the guy in charge and just layed on the sad story of how worried I am about my poor puppy with traffic/gators and would he pleeeeeez just come look at my yard to see if anything could work.  Whine, sniff.  He just left and he is going to try to get us a varience!!!   I should be ashamed of  groveling but if it works it will be worth it, so please cross your paws that we can get a fence!

Good luck with your request - I hope it gets approved.  We've been looking at golf communities, which typically don't allow fences along the fairways.  I'm not sure about the houses that don't front the golf course.  Anyway, your story gives me hope that we can have all our dreams come true.  It never hurts to ask - or beg!!  Keep us posted.

My mom is about to face this as well. She is moving to SC, and my babies along with her's are going to be spending a lot of time there. She is moving to an amazing, astoundingly beautiful community in Hilton Head. However the catch is, it is a golfing community and they are really strict about fences.

Anyone who knows me, knows, I have an absolute fear of alligators more then you can imagine so we have to find a place that will let her have a fence. Alligators are a very real reason to have a fence up!!!!

Keeping our toes, finger's paws and tails crossed for you

I'm all for groveling. What do people do who have children.?
There are children here but not very many - mostly retired people.  I guess the children play in the screeded lani.
I hope Rooney dood can get a fence...and a bro/sis!

I'm glad you did it though! I'm sure it will work. We built a fence around about an acre of our yard so that Sunny could run. We have an underground electric fence that works perfectly for the dachshund, but Sunny didn't seem to notice it and if she saw something across the road, she was gone. Now that we have the fence, I don't worry about her at all.

If anyone can get things done...you can Jane!!

Sasha and I will be standing with you and Rooney on this one...that's for sure!

We can't have anything happen to your little guy...I mean...who would protect you when your DH is out of town?!  lol...

Keeping everything crossed...and saying a prayer that all will go well...

Let us know what happens...

Yes, they are saying that we need to have 20 feet from the edge of the fence to the waters edge.  Why?  Who makes up these dumb rules.
Who knows.  It's always about property values and appearance of the neighborhood as a WHOLE I guess.  They want to see that lush green golf course and prefer to see yards vs. fences.  NOT saying it doesn't suck.  I don't think I could handle living with a HOA.
Our yard is fenced and we don't deal with HOA's, but I'm wondering about those invisible fences. I had a friend who swore by hers. Of course, only if you cannot put in a regular fence.
Thanks Caitlin, I wondered about that part. No Alligator's Allowed!
We have an electric fence and it works wonderfully. It won't work on gators though. But it will keep the puppies inside your yard.
