In our golfing community you can't really do ANYTHING to your house or yard without getting approval from the powers that be.  So I had a fence company come over and do up a proposal to install an area across the back of our screened lani that would give Rooney a place to play outside without me having to worry about him dashing away from me or from a alligator lurking at the edge of the lake.  Don't worry - I would not be leaving him there unattended.  I then found out that I couldn't have a fence if there isn't a 20ft setback from the lake - which I am short of.  Major bummer.  I figure that if I can't find a way to get a fenced area - Rooney won't be able to get a sister - I would just not feel that I could keep two puppies safe.  So here is what I did.  I called the guy in charge and just layed on the sad story of how worried I am about my poor puppy with traffic/gators and would he pleeeeeez just come look at my yard to see if anything could work.  Whine, sniff.  He just left and he is going to try to get us a varience!!!   I should be ashamed of  groveling but if it works it will be worth it, so please cross your paws that we can get a fence!

I think the gators should have wear them to keep them out of our yard - lol!.
good luck.  I do not know what I would do without mine
I hope you get the approval!

What a great post. We are waiting to see if we get a pretty cool property that has no fence and I want to put that in ASAP. It will need retaining walls, etc, and I am curious what people recomend for dog fencing. On one of the animal planet shows I hear that you should have cement in front of the fence so the dog doesn't dig out an escape whole and i think the height should be 8 feet. I don't like the look of the chain link fence and would love to have a wood fence but I hope my little budget agrees.

Any fencing recomendations, feedback?

Good luck!  I often wish we could get a fence!  It would be so much easier... for all of us.. our property is just too big for us to fence right now.... maybe some year!  Paws crossed for you though!
Paws are crossed!!!

I am totally not too proud to beg when it comes to my kids or my dogs!  I have even been known to cry if I had to!!!  Hey, most of these HOA rules are based on someones opinions or emotions anyway, so why not express yours?

Good for you Jane, I'm rooting for you girl!

I also live in a community that does not allow fences.  I was allowed to fence an area 12x12 off my sunroom so that is where my doods go to do their business.  I wish I had a fenced area large enough that they could just run around.  There are not enough dog owners in my neighborhood to support it but I think I am going to petition that a common area be fenced off to create a mini dog park.  Can't hurt to try.  Good luck with your variance Jane, Rooney will certainly appreciate it.

Hang in there!  It has to work in your favor, it just has to!  Maybe if it doesn't there could be some alternative type fence, cute

white picket thing that is strong enough to keep the pup (s) in.  We have codes in Broward, too, but lots of neighbors seem

to ignore them.  For instance back yard tool sheds with set back rules seem to be everywhere.  One neighbor even put

two of the ugly things up in front of his home.  One was taken down, the other eyesore still stands!  Fingers, toes, and paws are crossed for you.  Good Luck!

Another thought is perhaps they would permit a hedge.  Some of them can be very strong and tight together to keep unwanted pests out and wanted pets in!
Any word on the fence?
No Fence Update!  The Fence Police move very, very slow.
