Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We went to the vet today for the annual checkup.  I can't remember when but the last time we were there he weighed in at 96.7 pounds.  The vet at that time did not have any problem with his weight.  He is a huge boy and she did not seem concerned with his weight at all.  Not so at all today.  He weighed in at 100.4 pounds!!  I was surprised at that when the tech weighed him but then the new male doctor came in and told us he was getting too heavy.  This doodle runs with a dog group 5 days a week for 2 hours in a wooded setting with a dogwalker.  He is walked every evening when we get home for 30 minutes and on the weekends he goes to our community schoolyard where dozens of people meet with their dogs early in the morning. SO...excercise is NOT the problem.  So I thought to myself...what could be causing him to gain weight?  Could it be the dozens of milk bones he has every day?  Or could it be the egg McMuffins we buy him when we go thru the drivethru at McDonalds?  Or could it be the parmesan cheese and bits of leftovers we add to his dog kibble?  YES is the answer to my questions.  He is only 2 years old and the vet said we have to keep him slim to prevent the wear and tear on his joints.  Tonight....just kibble and a boring treat we bought at the vet!!  He is barking at the pantry cupboard in my kitchen as I type this!!!!!

Awww poor Thomas.... it will be a shock to him not getting his extras. He will have to settle for extra cuddles instead

Id stay away from the vet treat too, thats probably not good for him either lol

Poor Thomas. I am a girl who loves my treats too, so I feel his pain.

I know exactly what u mean !

Oh no!!!! Poor Thomas!!!! If he could talk I am sure he would say he was not fat but that is big boned!!!!  How about replacing the high calorie snacks for low calorie ones like green beans, apples, eggs, and all the other good ideas that I read on the food group.

That is a great deal of exercise he is getting, Good for you!!!

debbie -- we had a little poodle that this happened too ... same reason, too many

treats.  dr. said switch to raw baby carrots as treats.   she loved them and lost 5 lbs within a few weeks and she only weighed 24 lbs.  she still felt speceal, we werent miserable .... win , win

We use baby carrots as treats for my dachshund as well. She used to have a weight problem and her breed is very bad about having health problems if they are overweight. She loves them!

We got Sunny, our doodle, to be interested in carrots by giving one to Reba. Sunny wants everything Reba has.

I just gave Fudge and Vern carrots for the first time yesterday and they LOVED them. They took them out in the yard and were so happy over that carrot. Wish I felt like that when I am dieting.
I just gave him a piece of raw carrot guys....he dropped it on the floor and walked away!!  haha...but I will keep trying because if he is hungry enough he will learn to LOVE them as treats.  Maybe tomorrow...
Thomas is no dummy. I peeled a big carrot and gave the whole thing to my two doods. Maybe bigger is better in this case. Maybe put a small smear of peanut butter on it....can you tell I have trouble dieting?
What a big boy you have!!  Can you try to make the treats you do give him last longer by giving him a stuffed Kong or a marrow bone??  Check out the food group for more healthy suggestions!! Best of luck, dieting is no fun for human or doodle!!
Oh, a marrow bone is a great idea.
Poor Thomas!  I hope that the vet's unfeeling comments do not negatively affect Thomas' self esteem.
