Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I’m a newbie so I apologize if this question has been asked 100 times: I have a 12 week old Goldendoodle (mom golden retriever, dad standard poodle). I’m madly in love with her and believe she is without a doubt the smartest dog I have ever owned. One of the reasons I chose a doodle is because I loved their “funky” look. I’m starting to think that Chesney will look like a tall golden retriever and not have the funky kinky or curly look of a doodle. My vet tells me they see a number of Goldendoodles who look just like Golden’s – and that you would never know that they have any poodle in them. So…I’m wondering if anyone has pictures of their doodle as a puppy who might look similar to Chesney now (very golden retriever-like), but who eventually grew longer hair? Please understand – I’m thrilled with her either way, I just want to be prepared if she’s not going to get the “funky” look I was hoping for.

OK this picture is hilarious...Poor guy on the bottom has a look of "really? Will you get this kid off of me"
Here is one of my Webster's littermates. The first pic is when she's about 6 wks, the second at about 1 yr old. You can see that she is very retriever-ish and beautiful. I don't think she ever got a "scruffy" look.
One thing I've noticed from watching Web's littermates grow is that the ones who have a sleek, fine coat often have more of the golden retriever look. The ones who have thicker, fluffier coats often develop a bit of a scruffy look but usually the facial hair/beard is evident before 3 months old. Of course, it can be hard to judge because everyone trims doodle hair differently :-)
Welcome to the club..we're in the same situation with our now 20 week old Izzy. Her siblings all have the funky doodle hair. She had hair for awhile, then lost it!!! She is just starting to get it back again. Like you, I don't really care one way or the other...it's just a mystery right now. People always ask me what she is. I like the comment about a box of chocolate. It's so true esp with the F1's. We know 6 out of 9 of our 2 yo Lucca's litter and they all have different coats.
I wondered the same thing when I first brought my doodle home too !
Your chesney looks verrrrrry similar to my carlos. Her bone structure and coat type are very close. Only difference is that my carlos is 25% standard poodle and 75% retriever. It looks to me like you've got yourself a smooth coat doodle but it is hard to say because she is an F1 and their coats can change so much from the time they are that age until age 1!
What makes me think she is a smooth coat is that I do not see any facial fur at all even at 12 weeks most wavy/curly coat doodles usually have a few long hairs sprouting out between the eyes and nose. That is what I would look for in the upcoming months...if they don't start to develop soon I think she will most likely be a smooth coat!
Either way she is a beautiful girl!!
Check out my pics of carlos, you will definitley see the resembalance between them. My boy just turned 8 months and his coat has changed slightly since he was 12 weeks. At 16 weeks he shed alot of his puppy fur and developed a darker more coarse strip of fur down his back. Then his coat began to grow slowly but is still fairly short with slight wave to it. His tail really filled/fluffed out at about 5 and a half months and he started to get that longer retriever fur on the backs of his legs and chest.
Now he has never been a bad shedder, just a few hairs here and there( with the exception of when he blew out his puppy fur at 4 months)However, last week on the day he turned 8 months he began to shed like crazy! I am hoping it is just another coat change!
Keep me updated on coat changes and everything else! I'm going to say that chesney will look alot like my carlos but like I said earlier, it is soo hard to tell!! every doodle is so different from any other!
