What the heck is he?

So doodle friends. It has been nearly two months since we rescued Johnny from DRC and none could be more happier than we are as he truly is the most remarkable dog I've ever known. One small dilemma...no one seems to know exactly what he is??? My vet reckons he is a Portuguese Water Dog and so do a few people I meet at the dog park. I have been online and checked them out and yes, he does look similar, but his tail is docked and therefore, kind of resembles a poodle. His coat is not poodle though. It is very dense and thick and grows slowly. I am attaching two pics and hopefully, my keen-eyed dog loving friends can shed some light to this mystery. Whatever he is however, we could not love him any less as he truly is a gift from God.

Our Doodle girls both have docked tails too.  The breeder said it makes it easier when they are an inside dog that they are not knocking everything over.  He kinda looks like our Bailee when her hair is short it is very curly and thick.  She is a Goldendoodle.

I would die if my doodle didn't have his big beautiful sword tail. It is curled up over his back most of the time and has never hit anything over ever. We took him into stores when he was really little as they were very pet friendly in QUEBEC and he never at his young age wagged in the china shops. I saw the wheaten terrier at the dog park today with his docked tail as well. My sons baby great dane has a huge tail. When she gets big she may clear the table for us though?

I hear you. I love my big girl's tail and I'm sad Johnny does not have one, but his fur is so curly I doubt if it would ever be like hers anyway.

Wow...he does look an awful lot like your black girl. I really must say I love my other doodle's tail as when it is brushed it is glorious, but I think Johnny's coat is far to curly to ever be like that...

My Louie looks very similar when his hair is short. All Johnny would need is to grow his facial hair out to look more doodley! I wish I had a picture of Louie sitting like Johnny...but you can see his coat in the picture.
His mother was a black standard poodle and his daddy a creme labradoodle named Curly!
Johnny is a handsome boy whatever his roots!

I would love to grow Johnny's facial hair out like Louie but his coat is sooooooo flipping curly, I don't think there would be straight hair to be found.

his beard may be straighter if grown out longer...Louie is much straighter all over when his hair is longer!
