At 6.5 months we decided that it was time to get Rooney is first big boy haircut, his hair was 5/5 - 6 inches and was so beautiful!  It is starting to get hot here in FL and his hair had little dread locks so before the coat change started the matting we decided to go short.  Hey - it will always grow out right so here our our before and afters.

Before

After

His hair looks and feels like a chenille bedspread.

He is Gorgeous before and after! What a sweetie!
i know the first hair cut is shocking. i take my Rosies hair down even more about 1/2 inch. it used to take me 6-7 hours for the whole thing and now i am down to 3. great job! i love Rooney's coloring, very unusual.
He looks amazing! Very adorable.

Ahhhhhh! He is precious! Lucy goes on the 18th. It gets HOT here in TX.

It will be her first cut too!

Wow! Your groomer did a really nice job. Your dog is beautiful. He reminds me of an Old English Sheepdog.
I miss his "teddy bear" look but I know that this has to feel better.  The groomer took him down to about 2.5 inches and she said that if we go shorter that he could sunburn.  Wouldn't want that.  I'll grow it back longer for the fall.  I am thinking about having her cut the mustache area shorter, more like a snout.  I'm not wild about the wet face all of the time.
Yes.. definitely about going too short!  My groomer says (and I have also read this) that WE feel the heat with a lot of hair, but not the dogs... it actually works to 'cool them off'.... too short can actually make them hotter... I was so glad to hear/read that b/c I always feel guilty about leaving tori's hair longer just because I like it that way.... but after all she is half australian shepherd and their hair is definitely longer!

This is an interesting article about the hair length and heat debate. Particularly the section entitled, Hair Color, Length....

It seems to say that the benefit of length is primarily in light-colored dogs/animals.  Dark animals' benefit from length is balanced by the negative of heat absorbtion.  The article basically concludes that dark animals are not meant to be in hot sunny places.

Wow - thanks for this article, Melissa.  I'm going to think twice about clipping Misty's hair short for the summer!

Jane - Rooney looks super cute!

Well, I think there is short and shooooort, and of course the swimming and matting issue too in the summer :-)
Ahh your lucky! He still looks as cute as ever! and fluffy! Love his coat.. I hope Baileys stays that way with her first cut...
What a nice haircut. He looks so handsome!
