Yesterday, after we took Huff to the vet, he was laying in front of his fan when another dog (at our shop) started sniffing him. All of a sudden with no warning, he kind of I guess snapped at her?! WTD?! I corrected him by making him lay back down and then I took him to the back room and kept him back there until she left (It was more of a punishment than just trying to keep them apart). Maybe he felt bad after being at the vet but I don't want to excuse him. The thing is that I don't know if he really snapped at her or not. It was more like a bark growl towards her. Is he protective of his fan? Is this just aggression? Is this the right place to post this discussion? Was he just grumpy after taking him to the vet? I don't know what to do about him.:( What do you guys think. He has done this a few times. Once when he was sleeping and the rest of the times since his ear started bothering him. What's weird is that he didn't try to grab her, if you know what I mean? Thanks guys:)
Both. She doesn't bite or anything. She just makes this really low growl that is very atypical for her. It is when she is tired and sore from running around. She wants alone time, just like Adina suggested.
Taylor, you have wonderful instincts with Huff. I think you did just the right thing by making him lie down and then removing him. I also think he may be "grouchy" because his ears are hurting him. I wouldn't worry a whole lot at this point. He was sending the other dog a message....
Thanks:) I guess I am just like a mother:) I hope that is all it was.... I think it is because he didn't start doing it until his ears started bothering him.
I'd be grumpy too if both of my ears hurt and I had a broken nail. I wouldn't be too worried but I do think you did the right thing by taking him to the back room for a little time out. Aren't our doodles just like babies?
Take the fan away as it sounds like it might be resource guarding. He needs to know it is not his fan, if another dog comes in and he doesn't react then put the fan down and see how he reacts. Not snapping means reward fan
He doesn't do it all the time, he doesn't really resource guard with anything else and I can lay in front of his fan all day and he wouldn't do anything. Maybe it was something with the other dog? I don't know. It could be resource guarding with other dogs....
Huff may be more sensitive because he has sore ears and a sore paw. I know he gets lots of socialization at your shop, but maybe he needs some more in different places????
He does get socialization everywhere. He goes to the mall and everywhere else we go, just not the grocery store. Maybe we need to take him to the dog park? He likes some dogs and not others for some reason. Maybe he wasn't exposed enough to french bulldogs, bulldogs, and boston terriers when he was a puppy. You don't see very many of them at the dog park.... The dog he snapped at just recently was like a sort of pitbull mix puppy. She just sniffed him and he snapped. The other two times it was a bulldog that jumped on his back (out of excitement) and the other time it was a pug that startled him while he was sleeping.
