Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I could post this to the grooming group but my questions are specifically directed toward short haired doodle owners.

How long is your doodles hair when it is cut?

How long do you let it grow before you cut it?

How often does it need a cut?

What type of coat does your doodle have?

Do you cut or have a groomer?

Scissor or clipper?

How often do you brush?

Any other details?

I'll start:

Webster has thick curly hair, I cut it myself.  When cut I take it down to about 1 inch and I have used both clippers and scissors.  I have a problem with clippers because Web's hair is so thick that the clipper guards won't go through his hair easily.  I usually trim him every 3 months and try to brush about every week.  Because his coat is easy, he doesn't get brushed as often as I suppose he should - oh well.

Charlotte has silky curly hair, and again, I cut it myself.  She has only had 2 haircuts and I take it down to about 1 inch (I guess I only know 1 style :-) ).  I scissor cut Charlotte but I'm thinking that I could use clippers on her hair because it is silkier and the clippers may go through easier.  1st cut was Dec and 2nd cut was March.  Charlotte doesn't like brushing so we try to do a little brushing a couple times each week.

Porter has curly fleece.

I brush him 1-2 times a week.

My favorite length for him is 3/4-1 inch, absolutely no skin show-thru, curls forming, still easy to brush.

I let it get to 2-3 inches this winter which was a bad idea for us.  His feet were super matted from the constant playing in the snow.  Next winter I plan to have him groomed with poodle feet--possibly one of those cuts where the legs are longer than the body and he looks like he is wearing pants :-)

He gets groomed at Petsmart or a place called PuppyLove.  He is washed, brushed and clipped.  Sometimes I go for the close face, sometimes the fluffy face.  I am not a fan of the ears cut straight across the bottom--just my preference--so they get trimmed and rounded.

We usually cut him down to 1/2". And we cut him the same length everywhere, we don't leave his face longer

How long do you let it grow before you cut it?

Too long. :-)

Usually I cut it when it gets ridiculous, for Darwin that is 3 1/2 inches about

How often does it need a cut?

Maybe once at the end of each season. Sometimes less

What type of coat does your doodle have?

Wavy/curly fleece

Do you cut or have a groomer?

I have done both, but I am usually the one who does it

Scissor or clipper?

The last two times scissor, but I prefer clippers

How often do you brush?

3 times a week when he's short, nightly when he is longer

The combs get stuck in Rem's hair too. Any suggestions on what to do about that?

Webster is now 2 yrs old and I gave him a summer cut 2 months ago.  The clippers went through SO smoothly - I was very excited!  I didn't have combs on the blades but I'm going to try that next time.  I'm hoping that his adult coat will be easier to groom then what I guess was still puppy coat.

Bodi gets his hair cut to 1/2" - year round.  It will be about 1 1/4-1 1/2" long when it gets cut again.  He gets a hair cut every 8-10 weeks.  His coat is wavy and just like human hair!  I have a groomer who uses both clippers and scissors. (I now drive 45 minutes to the groomer!!)  We brush often because Bodi enjoys it.  He has only ever had matts behind his ears.  We like his hair short - it is so easy to take care of!
