There is a house in our community - a beautiful mansion really - on the market, no one living there, the family with children moved out a while back.  On our morning walk we went around back to the lani to get an idea of what it looks like.  OMG - there are 2 giant turtles living on the lani.  Empty food plates left near by.  So when WAS the last time that they were fed?  How do you take everything else and leave behind two turtles?  Are they the kind that could survive FL in the wild.  I'm going back soon with lettuce and my phone.  I'm going to go the realtor and get the facts and then tell her - that someone should help those poor things.  Nice lesson to teach your children huh?  Sick.

Here I am off a coral reef.  I was fine until the Barracuda swam past.  Talk about sucking  water into my snorkel.  Gasp!   Regardless it is fantastic to swim under the sea.   I'll swim with you all too.

Holy reptiles that's hilarious....I think turtles, tortoises...etc DO care. I know they're not the most expression filled creatures but I remember a story about a hippo and tortoise who became best friends after the tsunami. They were precious.  Owen and Mzee

Anyway, I'm with Adina, it's irresponsible either way.

Awww.  This is wonderful.

I say, Jane goes back and adopts the turtles.  She wants another................ doodle but maybe this was meant to be.

Leave it to Joanne! LOL
That's awful!  How anyone can just desert any animal in their care is beyond me.  Good job, Jane~

Call the Florida Division of Wildlife.  Call them now.    My experience with them;  phone calls and in person has been wonderful here in Ohio.  They take this very seriously.

I think this number may work for you:

16000 Chamberlin Parkway
Fort Myers, FL 33913-8873
(239) 561-8144

Jane, I hope you do not intend to give them water and food by getting  close when it is just you and Rooney alone.    Do you know what type of turtle these giants are?  Snapping, Painted, Box, .........................?

Don't underestimate a giant turtle.  Not only do they carry Salmonella but they also bite--especially when they are  hungry.  Rooney or your hand just might be lunch.  I'm seen them in action ( my ex-husband used to bring them home--UGH).  They can snap a 3 inch tree branch in half with one grasp.  That would be your arm.  Consider them a round alligator in these terms.

Be careful, be safe,  and just call that number above.   And THANK YOU for helping them!

Joanne and your list of reasons just keeps on growing doesn't it? wink wink

I have sent the info to the realtor - I feel that is the best I can do for now as this is private property and she claims they are being fed.  Do NOT worry - I'm not going to get close or take Rooney in there, nasty.

I'll check again when I get back from Atlanta and if I stop and there is once again no food, I'll then call myself.  I'll keep ya posted.

Glad you are safe. Enjoy Atlanta!  :)   I think the Azaleas are blooming right now. Beautiful.
Welcome to the ATL! Everything is blooming!
Jane, is the lanai totally enclosed, no way for the turtles to get out? The reason I'm asking is maybe they're gopher tortoises who live in the area and the people feed them.
