Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hey all,

We are in the throes of potty-training our little Fozzie Bear's sister doodle, Georgia. I have been hearing/reading that it is quite common for doodles not to tell you in the traditional way they need to go. Our Lab x Parker used to come stare at me and/or whine or bark if needed to get my attention. What do your doodles do?

Oliver will stand by the door and stare at us...No sound just stares.  I have tried teaching him to ring the bells on the door, but he refuses to do it.  I sort of keep my eyes on him, and when he is at the door, I know it is time...He will hold it though, so it is no big deal, I usually walk him 4-5 times a day..Sometimes maybe a little less, but I do try to make sure he goes out enough, without him having a problem.  I can leave him for 5-6 hrs with no problem...
Both of ours just sit by the back door during the day, and just wait there till someone notices. If during the night they will go lay by the bedroom door and sometimes come to the side of the bed and lick or stare. We are both light sleepers so we usually know when they are moving around and at the door. Those times are rare anymore.
At work Daisy comes up to me and puts her head in my lap, at home she stares at me....it's so cute.
Sophie has a little whine.  She goes to the back door and does it but if I don't hear her she will come to whatever room I am in and do it.  Lucy goes to the back door and gives one bark.  If I don't get up immediately the bark gets louder and a little more insistent.

Maggie is a bell ringer, she will ring to go potty or just to go out to sunbath.  KoKo is just beginning to ring the bells independently.  She usually just goes out whenever Maggie goes out.

My guys ring the bells if they have to go out.  When they were puppies and we were taking them out every 30 minutes, we would always take their paw and ring the bell before we went out.  After a while, they got it, and now if they need to "go" they shake the bells.  It's awesome because I can hear those bells no matter where I am in the house.
Same here
I love readin what all your doodles do!!! Lola will stare and whine....since our door to the backyard is in the tv room, we catch on pretty quick. At my parents,  she'll look out the window and whine....then we walk around the house to the door. So smart!!! At night, she'll get RIGHT in your face and whine. Sometimes it scares the bejesus out of us!!
Your Doodle will train you on how to know when it's time for her to go potty.  Our Sydney actually stamps her feet when she has to go potty.  Our Olivia was more difficult to figure out.  She will just sit still and look at us.  But she does that often just because she likes to please us all of the time.  So we never really know when she has to go out.  We just try to keep to a schedule of 4xs a day.
Darwin just stands by the door. We live in a small apt. so we can usually see him. If we don't notice him though, he'll come stand in front of us, stare at us, then go back to the door. He is trained to ring the bells but quickly figured out that if he rang them every 5 minutes, he could go out every 5 minutes. So we took them down.
We have a very open living area so Banjo simply sits by the front door patiently and waits....if we don't take notice he'll give a little whine.
Rua will go to the downstairs patio door and sit and wait.  If we are downstairs, that isn't a problem...if we are upstairs and notice she isn't around, we look there.  If we totally miss that, she'll ring the bell.
