Toby has started this new thing, which is actually quite annoying. He really isn't a barker, but recently, if he feels you aren't paying attention to him, and he wants you to, he barks. Loudly. For instance, if I'm doing the dishes and he wants me to look at him, he stands behind me and barks. This is probably another part of puppy adolescence, but short of ignoring him, is there anything else I can do?

Good for you! Sometimes, we just have to show them that they are annoying us and enough is enough and I believe this is a firmative but gentle approach.
my trainer uses the water bottle. but she uses the stream . and it works. i need to get s a water bottle,I got the fine mist by accident and he loved it. hes also starting to bark, when he wants your attention, and to play
When all of the above failed to stop our little barker, Piper, we tried something we saw on the TV show, you know the one with the british chic driving the Jaguar. She said to physically remove the dog and do a sort of "time out", so we put the dog in the bathroom for exactly two minutes with the light on. He hates to be without people, it took exactly three times of our doing this, now I only have to say "no bark" and point to the bathroom, or say "do you want to go" and the dog stops barking. It was amazing how the dog responded! Give it a try! He never even scratched at the door.
Lacey does this too.  We just say "QUIET" in a stern voice and look away.  We sometimes have to do it a few times, but overall it works.     Good luck!
